The Sunyani Traditional Council (STC) has vehemently expressed their opposition against the nomination of the Brong-Ahafo Regional Chairman of the NPP, Kwaku Asomah-Cheremeh as the Brong-Ahafo Regional Minister. At a Press Conference held at the Paramount Chief’s Palace in Sunyani, the Krontihene of Sunyani Oboaman Bofotia Boamponsem indicated that the nomination of Kwaku Asomah-Cheremeh is highly against the wish of the Sunyani Traditional Council and has therefore appealed to His Excellency Akufo Addo to revoke his nomination. Oboaman Bofotia Boamponsem claimed that the Traditional Council is against the nomination of Asomah-Cheremeh because he has disrespected the Traditional Authority after the Paramount Chief of Sunyani, Nana Bosoma Asor Nkrawiri, in October 2016, assured the then Candidate John Mahama an 80% of Presidential votes for the NDC from the region. The assurance by the Paramount chief to give then President Mahama 80% presidential votes did not go down well with the Regional Chairman of the NPP, Asomah-Cheremeh who condemned the Paramount chief, describing the endorsement as unfortunate, unacceptable and a breach of the constitution. Oboaman Bofotia reiterated that the NPP Regional Chiarman stated that “The Paramount Chief of Sunyani stooped to the lowest level by promising an 80% votes for President Mahama.” A statement which the traditional council considered as gross disrespect to the Traditional Authority, hence the NPP Regional Chairman was subpoenaed to appear before the Traditional Council and apologize for his ‘uncultured’ language, which Asomah-Cheremeh refused to appear and apologize. His conduct according to the Sunyani Traditional Council seems to undermine the authority of the Omanhene, therefore he is not the rightful person to head the Brong-Ahafo Regional Administration due to his disrespect for Traditional Authority which he is going to work with in the region. Meanwhile, shortly after the Sunyani Traditional Council’s Press Conference a multitude of supporters and members of the NPP thronged to Abesewa to meet the Regional Minister designate and ushered him in to the regional capital Sunyani where he addressed the crowd which offered him a rousing welcome. Lawyer Kwaku Asomah-Cheremeh expressed appreciation to the crowd for the support given him saying, “The campaign period is over, this is the time to unite and rally behind the current President and his administration to fulfill the promises made in order to move Ghana forward to the desire destination.” He promised to ensure a unified leadership in the region and uphold the rule of law without discriminating against any citizen when his nomination is approved after vetting. Mr. Asomah-Cheremeh used the occasion to pay tribute to both members of the NPP and the NDC who have lost their lives during and after the 2016 elections including the Asunafo North Chairman of the NPP, and the two supporters who were electrocuted during the campaign period and the former Municipal Chief Executive of Sunyani, Kwasi Oppong Ababio who was the NDC Parliamentary Candidate for Sunyani East.
