“I went to the sector Minister and told him what is happening (the agitations) and he told me he was aware of it saying that, the issue has been put before the ministry and when they asked the school authority they denied of moving programmes to Tamale. The Minister asked me what we want him to do now, and I told him that we want an autonomous university, and then he showed me documents with regards to the conversion of the Wa campus into an autonomous university”. he said. The Wa Central MP made the disclosure in an interview with a local radio station in Wa. Mr. Pelpou said he was not going to relent until the university is converted as an independent institution. He said that he intends raising the issue again on the floor of parliament for the Minister to speak to the matter. The MP said that all the other MPs from the Upper West region including Hon Anthony Karbo had shown interest in the issues emanating from the Wa Campus of the University for Development Studies and was confident the school will soon be granted the autonomous status by the government. This is the first time Hon Rashid Pelpou is commenting on the brouhaha over the alleged realignment of some important programmes from the Wa UDS campus to the Tamale Campus. He indicated that, the issue is of a great concern to him as the Member of Parliament, adding that, he is doing his possible best to find a lasting solution to the matter. Some aggrieved residents in the Upper West region poured out in their numbers to register their displeasure at steps being taken by the UDS top officials to realign some programmes at the Wa Campus to the Tamale campus. The demonstrators described the move as deliberate attempt by the authority of the UDS to sabotage the Wa campus opportunity to become autonomous University.
