Adentan Residents Get Results; As Gov’t Moves to Complete Footbridges

The violent demonstration and persistent agitations by the angry residents of Adentan Municipality in the Greater Accra Region have yielded results as Government finally resumes work on the six abandoned footbridges on the Madina-Adentan N4 Highway immediately.

The Roads and Highways Minister, Kwasi Amoako-Atta earlier said that works on the footbridges could resume in 2019, but the residents rejected his statement and demanded immediate construction of the six footbridges to avoid the rampant deaths being recorded on the Madina-Adentan N4 highway.

The residents mounted massive roadblock with burning of lorry tyres Thursday November 8, 2018 after a vehicle once again knocked and killed another road user (Senior High School student).

Not even resistance from the Police could stop the rampaging residents as police fired stray bullets to hit a woman and her son triggering more agitations.

However, Government in response to the concerns of the people has issued a statement directing the Ghana Police Service to check traffic violations on the highway for the time being.

Government has also promised to start work on the uncompleted footbridges within a week on an accelerated basis with multiple contractors to ensure quick competition.

“This is in accordance with already commenced processes prior to the unfortunate incident that occurred on Thursday,” a statement jointly signed by Transport Minister, Kwaku Ofori Asiamah and the Roads Minister, Kwasi Amoako-Atta has indicated.
Government has also indicated its preparedness to install all malfunctioning traffic signals and street lighting on the road to improve visibility especially at night.

The death of the Senior High School student brings the deaths recorded on the Madina-Adentan Highway to 193 in 2018 alone.
However, the National Road Safety Commission (NRSC) according to the statement is charged to intensify its education and sensitization programmes targeting drivers and pedestrians along the corridor”.
