The Minister for Roads and Highways and Member of Parliament (MP) for Atewa West in the Eastern Region, Kwasi Amoako Atta was virtually fuming with rage over allegations of misappropriation of monies meant for his constituents and rather charged the people to rise up and demand accountability from their chiefs who were profiting from illegal mining also known as “galamsey”.

According to the Minister, most of the chiefs in the area had profited immensely from the galamsey and enriched themselves at the detriment of the development of the area, yet the same chiefs always turn to local assembly and the MP even if a single roofing sheet of a school gets ripped off.

Addressing his constituents at Akyem Bomaa during the Farmers Day Celebration, Mr. Amoako Atta charged that instead of the chiefs to prevent the menace, they rather entered into agreements with these galamsey companies for their own benefits and they must render account to the people.

“The People of Atewa West must rise up! The People of Atewa West must rise up! You must rise up and demand accountability from our leaders on Galamsey. Even if a single roofing sheet gets ripped off from a school building, these chief don’t help always crying out to the District Assembly and MP for help, Yes we must help but the question begging for answer is where is the galamsey money”.

He said, “Nananom and Subjects should tell us what benefit did galamsey bring to this area. I want to know! Galamsey rather destroyed our water bodies and farmlands but some Chiefs benefited because they entered into agreements with these galamsey companies so they must render account to the people”.

Mr. Amoako Atta who was being accused by some persons in the constituency of enriching himself at the expense of the development in the area, cleared himself of ever stolen from his constituents.

The MP vehemently denied any wrongdoing and swore to God to strike him dead if his claims were false.

“I have been speaking in churches and before Nananom who are Spirit so I would have been struck dead if I have been lying to my constituents all these while. I swear before Nananom and Almighty God I have never robbed my constituents. God should take my life if I have ever stolen even Ghc10 meant for my constituents. God should take my life! God should take my life if as an MP I have robbed my constituency”, he said.

“As human as I am if I had unintentionally used monies of my constituency for something else which I am yet to be known I pray to God for forgiveness. If I become aware I will refund it 10 times. But I can confidently say I have never taken anything meant for my constituents since I became MP” he added.
