Time to Unite Against Corruption for Development, Peace & Security

This year, the International Anti-Corruption Day was commemorated on the theme: “United Against Corruption for Development, Peace and Security.” This provided a timely and an appropriate avenue for citizens to collectively reflect on the state of corruption in Ghana and the need to radically rethink and intensify efforts to deal with the canker.

The Ghana Center for Democratic Development (CDD-Ghana) in partnership with the Ghana Anti-Corruption Coalition (GACC), Ghana Integrity Initiative (GII), the Africa Centre for International Law and Accountability (ACILA), Alliance for Women in Media, Africa (AWMA), Penplusbytes, OneGhana Movement, Joy FM and Adom FM therefore, organized a silent march along some principal streets of Accra on Saturday, December 8, 2018 dubbed: National Stand Against Corruption.

The march sought to express our collective disapproval of corruption, highlight its costs on our society and economy, create awareness about the dangers of accepting corruption as a way of life in the country and also, call on the general public, Civil Society Organizations (CSOs), duty bearers, and the various accountability institutions to work towards arresting the problem.

The event had broad participation from the media, professional associations, religious bodies, student groups, anti-corruption/governance groups and citizens. The Executive Director for CDD-Ghana, Professor H. K. Prempeh; private legal practitioner, Mr. Akoto Ampaw; Islamic scholar, Sheikh Aremeyaw Shuaib; youth advocate, Goddy Mensah, child president, Graciella Gorez and CDD-Ghana's Director of Advocacy and Policy Engagement, Dr. Kojo Asante took turns to address participants.

A petition was subsequently submitted to the President, Nana Akufo-Addo, the Speaker of Parliament, Right Honourable Professor Mike Ocquaye and the Chief Justice, Her Ladyship Justice Sophia Akuffo.
