Who wins Awayaso seat today, as by-election is underway

The search for a credible and competent successor for the late Member of Parliament (MP) for Ayawaso West Wuogon Constituency, Emmanuel Kyeremanteng Agyarko has just begun today 31st January 2019 as the Electoral Commission of Ghana leads the process for a by-election.

88,710 voters are expected to participate in the by-election, which has seen massive publicity in the last few weeks.
The stakes are very high for the four Contestants for the seat including the widow of the late MP, Lydia Seyram Alhassan (NPP), Kwasi Delali Brempong (NDC), William Dowokpor (PPP), and Clement Boadi of the LPG.

However the two leading candidates from the NDC and NPP have tried to run each other’s integrity down in a bid to win the seat. The NDC candidate Kwasi Delali Brempong was accused of faulting the NPP for making a mistake by electing a woman (Lydia Seyram Alhassan) as their candidate, a report he has since emphatically denied.

Mrs. Lydia Seyram Alhassan of NPP has also described Mr. Delali Brempong as incompetent and unfit candidate for the seat.

Meanwhile, the Police have beefed up security in the constituency ahead of the by-election. The Police promised to be resolute in working with the Electoral Commission, sister security agencies and relevant stakeholders to ensure that all electoral materials are safeguarded for the integrity of the by-election.

Meanwhile, the Electoral Commission has denied claims by the NDC that the voter roll to be used for the Ayawaso West Wuogon Constituency by-election has been bloated by over 1,000 names.

The NDC, in a statement, accused the EC of being behind the bloating.

In the statement, the NDC indicated that its attempt to access the proxy list, transfer list, and special voters list have yielded no results.

But the EC has described the allegations as “untrue”.
