Ex-TV Africa workers to besiege premises over unpaid salaries/compensation

Some angry former staff of Television Africa are planning to besiege the premises of the station on an unannounced date following Management’s refusal to settle their salary arrears and compensation packages, six months after terminating their appointment, WatchGhana.Com has filed.
The company was owing the staff three months’ salary at the time of termination of their appointment.

The over 60 staff who were laid off in somewhere September 2018 are fuming with rage, and demanding the heads of the management on the chopping board for deciding to issue a cheque for GHC15,000.00 to settle salary arrears of another staff, Valentina Nana Agyeiwaa a.k.a. “Afia Schwarzenegger” after she embarrassed them on social media.

The controversial TV host took to the Instagram to announce that she had received and cashed out the cheque of GHC15,000 issued in her name by TV Africa.

Bragging that, “The only language people understand is violence. No one should ever in their miserable life tell me to change. Thank you very much @tvafricagh….it was a pleasure doing business with you”.

A copy of the UMB cheque issued to Afia Schwarzenegger dated 21st January, 2019 bears the number: 0021030978045. The agitating former workers insisted that their action was not against Afia Schwarzenegger but the Management for not treating them equally.

They threatened to storm the TV Africa premises together with the media and would remain there until their monies were paid in full to them. “We are going for our monies and we are not going to settle for anything less, because we are not fools”. The angry staff indicated that the TV Africa management had taken them for granted for far too long and they would this time round insist on their rights. “TV Africa management after we took them to court pleaded for out of court settlement through our lawyer. But they have since proven to unrepentant and still want to play games with us. No way!” They said that the management agreed to settle all the staff before the end of December 2018, but they have since failed to honour their promise. The disappointed TV Africa staff who are planning to wear red armbands to the station to press home their demands, said emphatically that they would go all out under the protection of state security to take their monies without any further delay. “TV Africa is playing hide and seek and deliberately refusing to pay our small salary arrears. Now they can’t tell us that they don’t have money because we have seen how much they have paid to our colleague Afia. We have all seem 15,000 cedis cheque they issued to her after she took them on a rough tandem on social media and other news portals”. Meanwhile, WatchGhana.Com has learnt that some of the staff have worked with TV Africa between five and 10 years, and before they were laid off the station was owing them three months outstanding salary. They are now demanding their unpaid salaries plus the benefits for the number of years each of them has worked with the company. However, Labour Act, 2003, Act 651 stipulates that “a worker or employee is entitled to be paid any remuneration owed him before the termination, any deferred payments owed him before termination, as well as any compensation due to the worker as a result of sickness or an accident”.
