2018 teenage pregnancy rate hits 437 in Tano North-GHS report

Statistics from the Tano North Municipal Health Directorate of the Brong Ahafo Region have indicated a high rate of teenage pregnancies in the area. According to the Tano North Mumicipal Director of the Ghana Health Service, Mrs Eva Aryee the Municipality recorded as high as 437 teenage pregnancies in 2018 alone as compared to 251 in 2017.

According to her, 15 percent of pregnant women who visited Antenatal clinics in 2018 were girls between 11 and 19 years.

Mrs Eva Aryee bemoaned that in the last three years, cases of teenage pregnancy kept increasing in the Municipality, leading to high school drop-outs among adolescent girls.

Speaking at the 2018 Annual Performance Review Meeting of the directorate, held at Duayaw-Nkwanta, the Municipal Health Director said the directorate was collaborating with stakeholders to find realistic interventions to address the problem.

She said public sex education had been intensified, and advised teenagers who could not control their sexual desires against unprotected sex.

Attended by Assembly Members, traditional authorities, civil society actors and other stakeholders in the health sector, the meeting was held under the theme "attaining universal coverage through effective leadership and governance". It created common platform for the directorate and the its key stakeholders to assess 2018 output and identified and find solutions to teething challenges that impeded quality healthcare service delivery in the municipality. Mrs Aryee said it required effective collaboration between parents, teachers, school management committees and traditional authorities to stem or control teenage pregnancies in the area.
