CHEREPONI CONFLICT: ‘Two dead’, 20 communities burnt, 600 women fled, schools closed

The District Police Commander for Chereponi, Chief Superintendent Henry Amankwatia has confirmed tension is still mounting in the area following tribal conflict between Konkombas and Chokosis.

According to him, over 600 women and school children have currently fled the area to the neighbouring towns for refuge.

At the moment, he said, all basic schools in Chereponi district have temporary been closed down, teachers fled and Senior High School students at Chereponi and Saboba who are due for final WASSCE examination have also stopped attending classes for their safety.

Speaking on TV3’s News 360 Monday March 18, 2019, the Police Commander disclosed that at least 20 communities within the Konkomba and Chokosi areas in the Chereponi District have been burnt down.

WatchGhana.Com has learnt that several quantities of food stuffs and farmlands have also been destroyed as a result of the conflict. Though it is rumoured that two persons have been killed and others injured, Chief Superintendent Henry Amankwatia said that the figure only remains speculative since the Police in the district had not officially received any such report. He disclosed that six (6) persons have so far been arrested in connection with the violence in Chereponi and the suspects have since been handed over to the Yendi Divisional Police for investigations. Fight broke out between Konkombas and Chokosis in the Chereponi District on 15th and 16th of March, 2019 leading to exchanges of guns and burning of houses. This is believed to be an escalation of a recent violence in the area that occurred on the 6th March 2019. The area is currently under curfew and security beefed up by Government to avert further escalation of violence.
