Angry NABCO trainees march to Jubilee House May 8

The Coalition of NABCO trainees (CONAT) nationwide have threatened to march to the Jubilee House on 8 May 2019 to petition President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo over their unpaid stipends and arrears, placement of trainees, regularisation of payments, and better working conditions.

After petitioning the president, the group plans to demonstrate against the management of the Nation Builders Corps for breaching their side of the contract per the engagement letter signed by all trainees.

“We express disheartening concern to the inconsistent and fluctuated manner of payments of arrears due trainees, recording instances where management have slashed and partially paid arrears to trainees with others especially trainees who resigned from YEA and Youth in Afforestation. Also, mismatch of names, wrong USN and no Ezwich number trainees who haven't received any of the stipends since the inception of the initiative amid our countless confrontations to authorities to address their predicaments,” the trainees said in a statement.

The trainees said the option of a demonstration to address their grievances follows many unsuccessful appeals to the NABCO CEO to address their concerns.

“We want the programme to run smoothly with regular payment and not paying in bit. Change has been long overdue and too long delayed. We Nation Builders must be monetarily fueled on regular basis to revitalise the spirit of nation building. We add that, due to improper payments, we are unable to plan and that has brought so many challenges to us. It is unfortunate and disheartening that we have come to this conclusion,” the statement noted.

The trainees are demanding the following:

1.Pay us all unpaid allowances (from November 2018 to date)

2. Henceforth, we demand regular payment of our stipends.

3. We demand all unplaced trainees be equally placed as soon as possible.

4. Since the six months probational period has been exhausted, we demand the secretariat come out with a clearer plan and the way forward with regards to the new contract that were to be given to trainees after the six months probational period.

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, on Tuesday, 1 May 2018, launched NABCO, which has employed 100,000 young graduates to assist in public sector service delivery.

Mr Akufo-Addo said at the launch that: “NABCO will be the vehicle to deliver one hundred thousand (100,000) jobs in seven (7) prioritised areas, defined as the following modules: Educate Ghana; Heal Ghana; Feed Ghana; Revenue Ghana; Digitise Ghana; Enterprise Ghana; and Civic Ghana.”
