Fire outbreak cases reduce in three regions in first quarter of 2019

Available statistics from the Ghana National Fire Service indicate that reported fire cases in Bono, Bono East and Ahafo have reduced with the sister-regions recording 217 fire cases within three months.

According to Assistant Chief Fire Officer (ACFO) Heroine Sekyere Boakye, the Bono, Bono, East and Ahafo Regional Fire Commander, 321 fire cases were reported within the same period in 2018.

She said though no casualty was recorded, the fires caused extensive damages to properties and personal belongings.

In a breakdown, she said wildfires recorded 107 cases, 56 domestic fires with electricity contributing to 14 cases of the fire incident and 40 cases of other emergencies.

Addressing personnel of the GNFS at a durbar in Sunyani to mark the International Fire Fighters Day, ACFO Boakye attributed the feat to intensify fire safety education, hoping that the successes would be sustained to protect properties and human life.

Personnel of the service had earlier embarked on a fire safety march to create public awareness in the Municipality.

The fire fighters held placards with inscriptions such as “switch-off appliances when not in use”, “call on 0352027129/ 0299340585/ 0291702140 in case of fire emergencies”, “never cook when felling sleepy” “light your match before turning on the burner”, and “and use professionals for domestic wiring”.

ACFO Boakye reminded the government on the need to expand fire stations to deprived areas due to rapid population growth.
