Kumasi: Police impound 120 tricycles without license

The Manhyia Divisional Police Command has impounded 120 tricycles used for commercial purposes in the Kumasi Metropolis and Asokore Mampong Municipality of the Ashanti region for possessing no license.
The tricycles popularly known as "Adedeta" were impounded during the command's special operation dubbed: "Operation show your license" in the area of Asawase, Aboabo, Alabar among others.
ACP Kwaku Buah, the Divisional Commander told WatchGhana.Com that most of the riders did not possess proper valid rider's license from the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) to operate while others had their age below 18-years.
He said those who have license will be verified at the DVLA for authentication since he suspects some of the licenses are fake.
Mr Buah said the command will process those without license and others holding fake licenses for court to face the law.
The police operation which started yesterday, he said will be continued till the riders acquire valid licenses and obey the laws of the land.

He said the command has sensitised owners and riders of the tricycles on several occasions on the need to get proper license to operate but have refused to acquire the license. He called on the general public to be cautious on boarding the tricycles, since they have not been regulated and authorised to be used for commercial purpose. Some of owners and riders of the tricycles who came to the police station to demand for the release of their tricycles accused the police of harassment. Meanwhile, the Ashanti regional chairman for the Adedeta Association, Nurudeen Issaka, said he will ensure that the tricycle riders who do not have license get license to operate. He pleaded with the government to legalise the operation of the tricycles for commercial purpose to reduce unemployment.
