Regent demands Committee’s report on Chereponi conflit to avert escalation

The Regent of Chereponi Traditional Area, Naa Jaminja Ndakar Malba has requested the President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to prevail on the Interior Minister, Ambrose Dery to present copies of the Committee his ministry set up to investigate the recent conflict between Konkombas and Chokosis in the area.
The Regent expressed serious apprehension of possible escalation of the conflict if the content of the report was not made known to the feuding parties to ensure some level of compromise and contentment. The conflict between the Konkombas and Chokosis over a small piece of land (a two acre land) have escalated at least three times June 2018 and March 2019.
Over a dozen deaths were recorded, several farmlands, foodstuffs and over 150 houses in 20 communities of both Konkomba and Chokosi areas were torched.

The Interior Minister, Ambrose Dery tasked a five-member committee to identify the remote causes of the renewed communal violence between the Konkombas and Chokosis in Chereponi in Northern region. The fact-finding committee was headed by former IGP Patrick Acheampong and was given up to February 12, 2019, to submit its report. However, the Chereponi Regent during the four days’ working tour of the President, Nana Akufo-Addo to the North East and Savannah Regions asked the President to personally intervene for the conflict to be resolved totally by letting the findings out to unveil the truth.

“We are not doomsayers but we believe that if nothing is done or said about the report from the Defence and Interior Ministers, the conflict is likely to reoccur, given the number of times it has occurred”. He however, called for the construction of a modern bridge between Chereponi and Sansane Mango in Togo. Saying, "The road used to be a trans-Atlantic trade route used by people of Togo, Burkina Faso, Mali, Niger, Benin and Nigeria. Now that we are in a new region, putting a bridge over the river will fetch the region and the nation a lot of revenue. The lack of bridge on that stretch makes it impossible for people to travel to and from Sansane Mango during the rainy season". Naa Ndakar Malba said his traditional council had allocated a 100 acre land for educational purposes, and demanded the President to build a tertiary institution in the area for the people. “I and my people have allocated a 100 acre land to the Ghana Education Service for the establishment of a Girls’ Primary, Junior High, Senior High and a Women’s College of Education.
