The inmates of Kumasi Central Prisons have pleaded with the President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to grant amnesty to colleague inmates who have served in the prison for many years.
Leader of the prison inmates, J.M Aikins, said there are sick and aged prison inmates who have served for so many years in the prison and their lives have become miserable and fast deteriorating.
He said inmates in Ghana especially the Kumasi central prions have not had presidential pardon since the New Patriotic Party (NPP) came to power in 2017.
Mr Aikins said the Kumasi Central Prions like other prisons has become congested, adding that granting of the amnesty will help to decongest the prison.
He said the constitution enjoins president the power to pardon inmates, and however, pleaded with the President to exercise those powers.
He also presided with the president not to discriminate in the granting of the pardon.
J.M Aikins said this when the Vice President, Alhaji Dr Mahamudu Bawumia commissioned borehole water system in the Kumasi central prisons today, Wednesday, May 22, 2019.
Speaking at the ceremony, the Vice President Alhaji Mahamudu Bawumia said water supply systems initially installed in prisons across the country are no longer adequate because of constant increase in the number of inmates in the country.
He said government will ensure equitable water supply and maintenance of personal and environmental hygiene in prisons across the country.
