Chereponi youth demonstrate against ban on motor riding

A group calling itself the Chereponi Youth for Peace has staged a massive demonstration this morning Thursday May 23, 2019 against the banning of motor riding in the area by the Interior Minister, Ambrose Dery.

According to the youth, the decision by the authorities rather gives the opportunity to the Konkombas in Saboba who are not affected by the ban to freely attack the Chokosis in Chereponi.

Spokesperson for the group, Amidu Kari Awufor alleged that since the announcement of the ban yesterday, six (6) communities of the Chokosis have been burnt down by the Konkombas from Saboba [5 communities last night and one community this morning].

He alleged that the Konkombas keep advancing and attacking them even during curfew hours, and anytime they had called the military “they give flimsy excuses; either they are far away or just tell us they are coming and will never come”.
“We want to place on record that we cannot accept the ban on motor riding because it is a deliberate attempt by Government to kill us.

The Konkombas are in the bush with their motorbikes and nobody is controlling them there. They come and attack anytime they want.”

He said the people of Chereponi would cross to Togo for asylum if the Government is not ready to protect them.
Adio of Chokosis on motor ban
The Government through the Interior Minister reviewed the curfew hours in Saboba and Chereponi to 4pm to 6am following the renewed violence between the Konkombas and Chokosis in the area. Several houses are reportedly destroyed and some human lives lost in the process. The Northern Regional Security Council has deployed more men to the area, but the situation seems to escalate by the day. About 16 people have been arrested in connection with the violence and some weapons and ammunitions retrieved.
