GLOMEF to train 20,000 anti-corruption activists for ‘Follow the Money’ campaign

Global Media Foundation, anti-corruption media-oriented organization is set to embark on a new mission to spread the message of Social Accountability across the country under its new project dubbed “Follow The Money (FTM)” campaign.

The project is meant to revolutionize young Ghanaians, especially those in Senior High Schools and tertiary institutions on their responsibility to demand better services from government and public office holders.  It is also to create awareness on transparency, accountability and good governance issues in the country.

Speaking to the media in Sunyani, the Executive Director of Global Media Foundation, Mr. Raphael Godlove Ahenu noted that one of the key strategies to be used to ensure that the campaign got results was the establishment of Social Accountability Movement (SAM) in all SHS and tertiary institutions in Ghana.

This he said is to empower the students to demand for improved public service delivery, an open government and good governance, as well as enabling them take part in national and district budget tracking and ultimately follow the money.

“Series of training will be organized across campuses to mobilize over 20,000 in and out-of-school youth to become Anti-Corruption activists. Every revolution started from academic places and we intend to revolutionize their minds in tracking government spending and holding government accountable”.

Some of the key money to be followed Mr. Ahenu indicated included the GHc465 Million that government said it had released for 1D1F, $1-million per constituency pledge under the Infrastructure for Poverty Eradication Programme (IPEP) for the 2020 fiscal year of which the commencement certificate makes available GH¢1.66 billion (equivalent of $320 million) for the 275 constituencies across the country granted by the Ministry of Finance and One village one dam as well as the district assembly common fund, among other government social protection interventions.

“In fact, to be frank with you, things are not really going well as a result of bad governance and corruption, and people aren’t talking, but if we keep  on doing that one day we will wake up and Ghana is no more.  I am now gingered to start asking government questions and to hold it accountable.”

According to the Executive Director of GLOMEF, after the launch, follow the money campus tour would be organized in selected tertiary and SHS schools to spread the message of social accountability in order to whip up their interest to join the campaign.
