Isaac Dogboe to defend title in August

The newly-crowned Sports Writers Association of Ghana (SWAG) Sports Personality of the Year, Isaac ‘Royal Storm Dogboe says he expects to be back in the ring to defend his world Boxing Organisation (WBO) super bantamweight title in two months' time against a yet-to-be-named opponent and was looking forward to dominating the division in a bid to help restore Ghana's glory in international boxing.

After being honoured with the SWAG topmost award last Friday, the young boxer told the Graphic Sports he hopes to be busy after being signed on by America's premier boxing promotions, Top Tank, owned by Bob Arum.

“At the moment I am signed on to Top Rank Promotions and they are looking forward for me fighting in August and from there we will have the first defence then afterwards we looking forward to unifying the division,” said a confident Dogboe, who was honoured a week after stopping Jessie Magdaleno with an 11th round TKO to win the WBO title.

“Many people lost faith in Ghana boxing and Ghanaian boxers. When some people went outside to fight it's like people expect them to lose but God being so good, He has given us that strength to go out there and bring the golden feeling back to Ghana.

“We have restored the faith and the pride of the people and given them something back Ghana boxing and put Ghana back on the world boxing map. A lot has been invested in me and I am very thankful to my family and everyone that is supporting team Dogboe,” he added.

The boxer said any attempts by his father and trainer, Paul, to pass on the baton to someone else could compel him to hand up his gloves because no other trainer could bring out the best in him like his father did.

“If my father should retire from coaching me I believe I will retire as a young boxer because I believe strongly that I have restored Ghana's lost pride in boxing meaning I have achieved something that has not been gained in a long time.”
