While the technical bench, led by Coach Otto Addo, must take responsibility for poor tactical decisions, a deeper issue continues to undermine the team: the absence of strong leadership on the field.

For too long, the captaincy of the Black Stars has been treated as a political bargaining chip rather than a strategic decision. A team captain should not be chosen merely because he is the most skilled, the oldest, or the most popular player. The armband must be given to a true leader—one who embodies discipline, resilience, and the ability to inspire and unite his teammates in the toughest of moments.

The Virtues of a Good Captain

A good captain must: must lead by example on and off the pitch through hard work and discipline; Communicate effectively with both players and technical staff; Motivate and inspire teammates when morale is low;
Demonstrate courage in the face of adversity and take responsibility in difficult matches; and Maintain control and focus, ensuring the team remains united regardless of pressure. Unfortunately, the Black Stars have lacked such a figure in recent years. Leadership on the field has been inconsistent, and this vacuum has made the team look disjointed and uninspired.

The current struggles of the Black Stars stem from three interrelated problems:

Poor Tactical Approach – Otto Addo’s strategies often appear reactive rather than proactive. His inability to read the game quickly and make decisive changes has cost Ghana dearly in competitive matches. The team struggles with creativity, attacking coordination, and defensive discipline, leaving fans frustrated. Non-Serious Attitude of Players – Too many of the foreign-based players play with less urgency and commitment in national colors than they do for their clubs. Some appear more interested in maintaining their European contracts than giving their all for Ghana. This lack of seriousness manifests in careless mistakes, missed chances, and poor fighting spirit. Lack of Leadership and Unity – Without a strong captain to rally the team, the players look scattered and uninspired. When the going gets tough, no one seems willing to take responsibility.
The Ghana Football Association and the technical handlers must stop playing politics with the captaincy. Leadership must be based on merit, character, and influence, not favoritism or appeasement. Otto Addo, if he is to succeed, must also rethink his tactical approach and demand seriousness from players, particularly those based abroad who often underperform in national duty.

The Black Stars’ problem is not talent—Ghana has an abundance of it. The problem is leadership and commitment. Until these two ingredients are restored, Ghana’s football glory will remain a fading memory rather than a living reality

Otto Addo coached his youthful side to a 4-3 win in the 2026 FIFA World Cup Qualifier against Central African Republic on Monday night.

Jordan Ayew turned up in style at the Baba Yara Stadium scoring three goals in the win while Abdul Fatawu Issahaku also contributed a goal.

Jordan and Thomas Partey are two of just a few experienced players in the current setup up.

The head coach believes the youngsters will need time to adapt playing with each other.

“I hope that Ghanaians give us time. It's always difficult because after this, the guys will be on a break and then coached with different ideas and then I will come with different ideas too,” Otto Addo said.

“It's always difficult because I always look at the opponent and see what solutions are best. I can guarantee you that the approach to our next game will also be determined by how our opponents play."

“The players are very young but they will grow and learn to adapt. They will recognise the right situations and make the right decisions with time," Otto Addo added.

Ghana now occupies top spot in Group I after four games played, picking up nine points in that period.

The Crystal Palace forward stole the headlines on Monday evening as the Black Stars defeated the Central African Republic.

Jordan scored three goals in the 4-3 win at the Baba Yara Stadium on match day four of the 2026 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers.

Speaking after the game, the 32-year-old talked about his readiness to sacrifice for the national team.

“I've been playing out of position for quite some time in the national team and also at the club level. But I have always done my duty, put my country first, and never complained because I always give my all,” he said.

On what his favourite position is, Jordan added: “It’s difficult [to say]. It's not something that I like to talk about but obviously my favourite position right from the academy in France, in the national team has always been as a number 9."

“But I understand because I have qualities that allow me to play in the pockets of spaces, and I don't complain.”

The Black Stars beat Mali 2-1 in Bamako and are hoping to replicate that result against CAR at the Baba Yara Stadium on Monday at 19:00 GMT.

However, Addo remains wary of the visitors.

"It's going to be very difficult. For everyone who thinks we can just play them, I don't think it will happen," he said at the pre-match conference.

"They're doing well, especially in the offensive transitions. They're very dangerous; they showed that in the 1-1 draw against Mali."

The Black Stars sit third in Group I with six points, and a win will be a real shot in the arm in their quest to qualify for the global showpiece.

The team will host the visitors on Matchday Four of the World Cup qualifying series in Kumasi on Monday at 19:00 GMT.

Addo's first experience as coach of the Black Stars was at this venue, where Ghana faced Nigeria in the playoff final for the 2022 World Cup.

Fans turned up and ultimately helped the team secure a positive outcome, leading to the Black Stars eliminating the Super Eagles over two-legs and earning a World Cup slot.

"I was really overwhelmed the last time we came here. To be honest I didn't expect that," Addo said in a pre-match conference.

"Support should be unconditional, not only when you win and Kumasi always shows support no matter the circumstances.

"I am very happy to play here because I know this will give us an extra kick because even in hard times, I know they'll always support us."

Ghana sit third in Group I and could temporarily go top with a victory over CAR.

The Hasmal Ladies recorded a 2-1 victory at the University of Ghana Stadium to win the title again, their first since Malta Guinness Ghana became headline sponsors of the top flight.

Having lost the last two finals against the same opposition in the last two seasons, the Sekondi-based side were determined to end the Nana Mma dominance.

Veronica Baa Kumah opened the scoring in the game with a stunning strike from outside the penalty box to give Hasaacas the lead inside 11 minutes.

The lead was doubled three minutes later.

Fiduos Yakaubu's great cross into the far post was met by Abdulai Mukarama who made no mistake from close range to beat the goalkeeper.

Hasaacas went into the break with two goals ahead and had done enough to keep Ampem Darkoa quiet on the night so far.

The Techiman-based outfit returned from the break the better side in a half that was dominated by lots of medical attention.

Ampem Darkoa's efforts were rewarded in the 73rd minute when the league's top scorer, Ophelia Serwaa Amponsah scored to half the deficit.

Despite the late pressure on them, Hasaacas Ladies were able to see out the game and reclaim the league title from their arch-rivals for their fifth since the inception of the Women's Premier League.

Addo left out Andre from his 26-man squad for the matches against Mali and the Central African Republic, a decision that has sparked considerable discussion among fans and former players.

The 34-year-old has scored five goals and helped Le Havre survive relegation in the French Ligue 1.

"For me, if you talk about players in good shape at their club level right now, he is one of them," Boateng stated.

"A player like Dede Ayew has to be in the team even if you're not starting him. He has to be there.

"His influence in the national team is significant. Some of the players are very close to him and they listen to him a lot. I respect the coach's decision, but for me, he has to be in the squad."

Andre holds the record as Ghana's most capped player with 120 appearances since his debut in 2007.

Despite training for only five days, the Black Stars coach sounded confident in Tuesday’s press conference.

"Surely, I think we are ready for the game. I am very satisfied with how the players understood how we want to play," he said. "This is going to be a tough match away in Mali but we also have the quality to compete against them although we didn't have a good AFCON.

"We have the players to get three points from Mali." He concluded.

His optimism, while encouraging, was strange. Strange because of the current state of affairs.

The players Otto Addo mentioned are not as good as he says at least not in the context of their Black Stars performances.

In 2024, Ghana is yet to win any football match, competitive or friendly.

Ghana started the year with an abysmal 0-0 draw with Namibia in an Africa Cup of Nations preparatory match. At the tournament itself, the Stars lost to Cape Verde (2-1), drew with Egypt (2-2) and drew with Mozambique (2-2).

Post-AFCON 2023, Ghana’s malaise has continued. A 2-1 loss to Nigeria was followed by a 2-2 draw with Uganda in Marrakech. Those were Otto Addo’s first two games in charge.

In the past five years, Ghana has failed to beat teams like Madagascar, Angola, the Central African Republic, and Comoros – twice, first in the 2021 AFCON and last year in the ongoing World Cup Qualifiers.

AFCON-wise, Ghana has won only one match; 2-0 over Guinea Bissau, across the last three tournaments.
Moreover, Ghana has not won a match at the AFCON in a run stretching back to 2019 against Guinea-Bissau.

When Otto Addo announced his squad last week, he reminded Ghanaians that he ought to fix the team's broken culture, and work ethic, and build cohesiveness.

But for his oath of secrecy, Otto Addo could have explained the extent of the cultural decay in the Black Stars. He kept quiet in keeping to himself. That is a position I am happy to take.

What should not be hidden or downplayed, is the extent of work that needs to be done. Cohesiveness is not forged in a day. Or in five training sessions.

It takes time.

By 2026, Otto Addo would have managed eleven competitive matches as Black Stars coach; the eight remaining World Qualifiers, and three AFCON 2025 group stage games.

At the moment, he has yet to coach a competitive game since returning. The five training sessions are all there is to draw from.

That is why Ghanaians need to be patient and allow this team to grow. That is not to say that it is out of place to expect a good effort. Far from that.
The broader point is that Ghana may well win this match and fail to win the next three as we have done in the last six.

It is an important match, yes, but context matters, too.

Current Standings

Comoros has emerged as the surprise package of the 2026 World Cup Qualifiers, having amassed six points from two matches. Their impressive run includes a 1-0 win over Ghana at the Stade Moroni.
After an impressive 3-1 win over Chad in November, Mali dropped points in a 1-1 draw with the Central African Republic. With four points from two games, the Malians are in second place.

Madagascar, who Ghana beat in November, has a superior goal difference to Ghana but has the same points tally as the four-time African champions.

On Wednesday, the Central African Republic secured a 1-0 win over Chad. That result means Ghana has dropped to fifth place in the group and needs to win in Bamako, to stay in contention.

Head-to-Head
The two teams have met a combined ten times. Ghana has won five of those meetings, lost on three occasions while the remaining two have ended in stalemates.

Ghana won the first-ever World Cup Qualifier between the two sides; a 2-0 win in Bamako with goals from Kwadwo Asamoah and Matthew Amoah. In the reverse fixture, the two sides played an entertaining 2-2 draw in front of 39,000 spectators at the Baba Yara Stadium. Ghana, who had already qualified for the World Cup, scored through Anthony Annan and Matthew Amoah.

However, Mali has had more joy in recent meetings, winning three of the last six with two defeats.

The Black Stars are winless in their last six matches; two draws and four defeats, while Mali have won three, with two draws and just one defeat.

Team News

Ghana captain Thomas Partey is available for selection for the first time in seven months. The Arsenal midfielder missed Ghana’s first two qualifiers in November, before being left out of the Africa Cup of Nations in Cote d’Ivoire over fitness concerns.

Forward Andre Ayew is not available for selection after being left out of the team by coach Otto Addo.
Athletic Bilbao winger Inaki Williams and L.A Galaxy winger Joseph Paintsil is also missing out through injuries.

Mali is also without Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Yves Bissouma.

Amadou Dante, Mohamed Camara, Aliou Dieng, Amadou Dante, Boubacar Diarra, Adama Traore, and Sekou Koita who were not available for the international friendlies in March, have all returned to the team.

Young Apostles became the latest team to secure promotion to the top flight next season after beating Techoman Heroes on penalties on Tuesday.

The Wenchi-based side won 4-3 on penalties after a 1-1 draw after 120 minutes of action in the Division One League Zone 1 playoff at the Accra Sports Stadium.

Quizzed on the outcome of the game, Anim Addo said: "I am very proud. It's the result of hard work, the reward for dedication, the reward for commitment and our consistent strategy."

"We've been consistent. Our strategy has worked perfectly and we built the team from scratch and with youthful players. This is the result."

During the tour, Mr. Agyepong engaged in detailed negotiations with various clubs and stakeholders, focusing on player development and enhancing the Academy's facilities in Winneba.

He revealed that agreements have been finalised with three top European clubs, which will be visiting Ghana in the upcoming weeks.

One significant partnership is with French club Bastia, which has committed to providing materials for constructing a modern astro turf pitch to complement the Academy's existing grass pitch.

Additionally, Bastia will offer substantial financial support for the project. In return, Kenpong Academy will facilitate the transfer of promising talents to Bastia and other European clubs.

The partnership with Bastia will soon become visible through promotional materials and marketing insignia displayed at Kenpong Academy.

Bastia-branded football pitches and playing kits will highlight this unique collaboration as the French club aims to bolster the Academy's development.

As part of their commitment, Bastia will assign a top-class coach to lead Kenpong Academy's coaching department, enhancing the technical expertise available to the Academy.

"It has been a fruitful tour, very engaging and hectic, but worthwhile," Kenpong stated.

"I met with the clubs’ CEOs, and they are eager to partner with us. They were impressed by the energy and determination of Kenpong and the fact that he had single-handedly developed a project like the Academy in Winneba."

He added, "They are ready to travel far with us, and that motivates me to go the extra mile. I received preferential treatment, including VIP seating at the Strasbourg Stadium, and I was humbled by their respect. I am truly grateful for their warm gesture."

Kenpong expressed his profound gratitude to S.C. Bastia President, Claude Ferrandi, and Technical Director, Eric Descombes, for their exceptional hospitality, which included opening the club’s offices to him and treating him as one of their own.

"I am really grateful for the professional manner they handled my visit. It warmed my heart greatly," he said.

Last year, Kenpong, along with former Black Stars Coach and Captain Kwesi Appiah, toured clubs in Spain and France.

In late 2023, top officials from Spanish giants Barcelona visited the Winneba-based academy and paid a courtesy call to the Youth and Sports Minister, Mustapha Yussif.

It was titled "Ghana’s growth history: New growth momentum since the 1990s helped put Ghana at the front of poverty reduction in Africa".

The article claimed that "Increased agricultural production and human capital development helped deliver Ghana’s rapid and steady decline in poverty. Poverty rates among cocoa farmers declined from 60% in 1991 to 24% in 2005."

The Western Region, where I grew up in the 1990s, was a significant contributor to Ghana's economic growth. Big corporations had emerged to add value to their natural resources for domestic use and importation. Corporations like the West African Mills Company (WAMCO), Dupaul Wood Processing Company, Takoradi Flour Mills, etc. In Essikadu, a few miles from Kojokrom where I grew up, there was John Bitar. Another wood processing company.

I do not know whether they were legally required to, but a number of them made a deliberate effort to hire a significant number of their staff from the host communities. Some offered scholarships for staff to further their education, while others offered scholarships to brilliant but needy students in the community.

These interventions made them popular among the low and middle class who formed the bulk of the population.

It was not just popularity. The locals felt a sense of belongingness, too.

In 2003, a neighbor was prosecuted for joining several muggers to steal from a wood processing company. He had been identified by two members of the community who had seen them on the company premises, long after their working hours.

Those were the days when the community had intimate knowledge of each member, and even more about the things they cared about, such as where they made their money.

In this instance, however, the "whistle-blowers" did so because their children were direct beneficiaries of the company's interventions.

Such was the level of affinity these organizations enjoyed.

So when one of them; Samartex Timber & Plywood Company Limited, created Samartex 1996 - a football club, building a support base was uncomplicated.

Even in the lower tier division, their games always drew capacity crowds and it was not just out of blind loyalty. People turned up because the football was good.

Before they achieved anything significant, Samartex was always respected because, the football club, like its mother company, was very well run. Regular funding from the Timber company means they have always paid decent salaries and on time. This attracted some of the region’s best talents even if Samartex did not have the name, yet.

As a result, the region’s heavyweights were forced to pay attention. Matches against Sekondi Hasaacas, Eleven Wise, or even Cape Coast Ebusua Dwarfs, now meant more. If the big teams won, they did not pass up the chance to remind everyone of who the real power was. Especially if it happened in Samreboi.

After both Hasaacas (in 2016) and Eleven Wise got relegated, there was a sense that Samartex needed to be checked before they could usurp either as the true football force in the Western and Central regions.

Samartex was one of the few clubs in the lower divisions who could offer professional contracts and honor them. The money kept coming because the company could see the result of their investment - growth.

Their progress drew admirers and enemies alike. Enemies whose failings, had largely been blamed on obsolete management practices and money, meant that more than anyone else, they knew the potential Samartex had.

In 2021, Samartex became everything their rivals dreaded. The club made a few changes. Edmund Ackah, a football administrator with decades of experience was hired as Chief Executive. Ackah had previously served on Kotoko and Medeama S.C’s management teams.

Paul Akwasi Anyaba, a progressive mind who gave up the cassock for football, was hired as Business Development Manager.

Before his appointment, Anyaba had superintended Skyy FC’s rise to prominence, finishing second in Division One Zone Three. So Samartex went for Anyaba, whose success at Skyy denied them qualification. In these two, Samartex had a blend of traditional and progressive minds who knew the Ghanaian game inside out.

They understood the concept of talent and what it means to their fans, but also the kind they can compete with and possibly transfer for good money. Their knowledge was not only limited to that but also where to find these players and who gets them first in the food chain.

Paul Anyaba, beyond all he brings, is also a notoriously shrewd negotiator.

Together, the pair set about, with Henry Wellington as coach, to secure Ghana Premier League qualification. They did it within a year.

In their first season in the topflight, Samartex continued the trend of signing some of the country’s best talents. Isaac Afful (left back), Richard Baidoo (goalkeeper), and Emmanuel Keyekeh (midfielder) joined from Skyy FC, Hearts of Oak, and Asante Kotoko respectively. In the end, they settled for a respectable 10th place. A year later, they added the hottest commodity on the local scene, Evans Osei-Wusu from Tema Youth. Baba Hamadu Musa, a born finisher at Skyy FC, was also signed.

In keeping with the mother company’s commitment to local content, Samartex has three players from the community on the team. One of the three; Francis Gyetsuah, has featured 26 times in the league this season. Up to seven of the 23 first-team players are from the Western region. Signings like Ebenezer Ocran, a popular figure in the region, have advanced the club’s agenda in communities far and near.

But smart recruitment is not all there is to Samartex. They have a robust structure that is immune to shocks such as sudden exits of key personalities. In the last two years, they changed CEO, General Manager, and three coaches – Henry Wellington, Annor Walker, and Nurudeen Amadu. At other clubs, such changes would be the excuse for failure disguised as a transition.

At Samartex, change is the catalyst for the next level.

At Samartex, the more things change, the more they remain the same.

Their growth has not been at the expense of the very ideals that served them well in their formative years. They have stayed true to their founding identity. It reflects how they remain in constant touch with the community. This allows them to build a close relationship with the new generation of football fans in the hope that they will choose Samartex as the club to support. Ahead of their league match with Nations FC, the club took their community engagement activities to the Samreboi central market in an exercise of its long-standing tradition.

Sound management principles.

An admirable cussedness and devotion to tradition.

Strong community engagement.

And a practical sporting philosophy that even the relationship manager at the timber company understands.

That is how the latest Ghana Premier League champions were forged.

That is how the latest Ghana Premier League champions were forged.

The championship campaign itself was forged on the back of a strong domestic form. It is also the one constant in every title-winning season in the past 24 years; the league has been won by one of the best four-performing home teams each time.

Samartex did not only follow that path. They improved it.

The Timber lads have won 15 out of 16 home matches, amassing 45 points out of a possible 48 in the process. That tally is the best home record in the Ghana Premier League in twenty years. The next best home record in that period is Kotoko's 43 points from the 2007/08 title-winning season. In that period, only five teams; Berekum Arsenal (40 points in 2006/07), Aduana Stars (43 points in 2020/21), Bibiani Gold Stars (40 points in 2021/22) Bechem United, and Nsoatreman FC (42 points in 2022/23) have failed to win the league after securing 40 points or more at home.

In terms of goals, Kotoko (34 in 2007/08) are the only title winners to have scored more at home than Samartex (31).

What next? Continuity. Samartex have the resources to fund whatever they want to do next. In the past two years, two of Ghana football’s production houses have disintegrated into nothingness; Liberty Professionals and West Africa Football Academy.

What next? Continuity.

Samartex, the timber company, and not the football club, has the resources to fund whatever the club wants to do next. It is therefore important that the club begins to actively pursue financial independence. For Ghanaian clubs, there is a well-traveled path. An old, yet relevant and effective trick in the book; is revenue from player transfers.

In the past two years, two of Ghana football’s production houses have disintegrated into nothingness; Liberty Professionals and West Africa Football Academy. These clubs made their name as model football clubs that could identify world-class talent and sell them for top dollar. They have collapsed but the markets they served still exist, with even more appetite for talent. In their absence, their 'clients' have been forced to look elsewhere. That is one area Samartex could explore.

Samartex Timber and Plywood Processing Company, the club's main financier, has the resources to put the infrastructure in place for such a project. For that, they may need a few more training pitches, hostel facilities, gym etc. Money for that would have to come from the mother company, as the club itself does not make enough.

Per the GFA’s announcement last year, Samartex will earn a meager GHc 500,000 as prize money. Yeah. Just under $34,000.

Sources say the club is expanding its pool of scouts, ostensibly to have first-hand access to the best talents, especially from the northern belt.

Likely, this is not the sum of their ambitions. Whatever it is, Samartex has everything in place to attain it. They only to need reach for it.

Djiku will be playing under the legendary Portuguese after Fenerbahce appointed him as their head coach.

Reacting to Jose Mourinho signing for his former club, Appiah is hopeful Alexander Djiku’s time at the club under Mourinho will be a success because the former Chelsea boss has coached many successful Africans.

"Jose Mourinho has been very good with African players and I think everyone he’s worked with proves themselves including Didier Drogba, Solomon Kalou, Michael Essien, Mikel Obi and a lot of them,” Appiah told Responsible Gambling.

"We have Djiku who has been able to win the hearts of the fans with the way he carries himself around and the way he approaches the game and I hope that with the arrival of Mourinho, he will be able to take his game to the next level."

Stephen Appiah has made over 60 league appearances for Fenerbahce between 2005 and 2008.

The former Ghana captain has won two titles with the Turkish giants; the 2006/07 Turkish Super League and the 2007 Turkish Super Cup.

The Timber giants unlocked a new milestone in their history just a season after being promoted into Ghana's top flight.

Nurudeen Amadu's men won the league title with two games to spare after Aduana and Medeama SC were handed defeats in their respective games over the weekend.

Emmanuel Mamah clinched the crucial goal moments before halftime, propelling his team into the lead in a moment that would ultimately define the match.

Persistent heavy downpours caused a delay in the game, making the pitch unsuitable for play. However, after thorough interventions and inspections, the match resumed, with the entire second half going ahead.

The Nsenkyire Stadium erupted with joyous scenes as die-hard fans celebrated with unbridled emotion and excitement.

Samartex's victory signifies a rare occurrence in the Ghana Premier League, as no champion has successfully defended their title since Asante Kotoko in 2014.

They now join the esteemed ranks of clubs from the Western Region to claim the Ghana Premier League crown, following in the footsteps of Sekondi Eleven Wise, Hasaacas, and Medeama SC, who won the competition last season.

Across 32 matches, Samartex won 18 games, drew four and suffered 10 defeats powering them to success.

Dr Bitugu, who was appointed to the reconstituted Appeals Committee of the football governing body following an order from the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) to re-adjudicate the matter between Tema Youth and Dreams FC, revealed in an interview on Prime Take with Muftawu Nabila Abdulai that some individuals, who claimed to be the owners of the country's football, were unhappy with the decision when the matter was heard and a verdict was issued.

Dreams FC was demoted in November 2016 for featuring a player with two separate nomenclature, Cudjoe Mensah/Daniel Gozah before their qualification to the Ghana Premier League in 2016.

Tema Youth filed a protest, but it was dismissed by the GFA Disciplinary Committee leading to the legal action at CAS.

The Swiss sports adjudicatory body ordered the FA to have a matter heard by a different panel, leading to the inclusion of Dr Bitugu.

"You recall when Tema Youth lost the case at the Ghana Football Association, they took it to CAS. CAS wrote back and fell short of saying it is obvious that something has to be done about it and ordered that the case has to be heard again but with different people," Dr Bitugu recalled how he joined the Committee.

"I was there when Alhaji Sannie Daara called me and arranged for me to speak to the president [Kwesi Nyantakyi] and that was how I became a member of the GFA Appeals Committee," he recounted.

The case's complexity was apparent from the start. "The case was tough and I am happy I wasn’t too old in the system at the time," Dr. Bitugu noted.

"I was happy that at that time, I got like-minded people on the committee not ready for any external influence."

The committee, which included notable figures like the current Special Prosecutor, Kissi Agyebeng, faced intense scrutiny.

"It was a very revealing case. I felt that perhaps something needed to happen for the case to be determined. When we passed the judgment, I had people telling me, ‘Why did you pass that judgment?’"

Despite the pressure, the committee stood firm in their decision, leading to criticism from influential figures in Ghanaian football.

"Some people said we know Ghana football, we are the owners of Ghana football. Why did you rule like that?" Dr. Bitugu recounted.

He responded to these criticisms by emphasising integrity in the sport: "If you are an owner of football, then your actions are only tantamount to disowning football in Ghana."

The fallout from the decision was notable.

"People were not happy with the outcome not because the case was unfairly determined, but the question was why are you disturbing the status quo," Dr. Bitugu said.

"Why don’t you just leave as it was. They would say the decision is right, but why would you do that?"

Dr Bitugu's revelation gives credence to rumours that some people trusted with power to govern football abuse their authority, and he identified them as enemies of the sport, but they are found in every sector.

"These are big people in football. Some of us are the enemies of football and the enemies of sports in the country unfortunately, but you find them everywhere and in every sector."

Asante played a pivotal role en route to his side's win in the final against Venezia.

The 20-year-old provided two assists in the final which were taken advantage of by David Pejicic and Luca Bonin as Udinese claimed a 2-0 win.

This win secures Udinese's promotion to Primavera I for the upcoming season.

The forward has had an exceptional season, notching an impressive tally of 21 goals while adding up 12 assists across all competitions.

His outstanding performance will be one that could earn him a place in the first-team next season having failed to register an appearance in the just-ended campaign.

Udinese survived relegation from the Italian top flight following their 1-0 win over Frosinone on the final day.

Real needed two late goals to beat Borussia Dortmund 2-0 at Wembley after the German side had dominated the first half.

"I never get used to it, because it was difficult, very difficult, more than expected. In the second half we were better, more balanced, fewer losses… This is a dream that continues," Ancelotti told Spanish TV station Movistar Plus+.

"In the first half we were a bit lazy, we had losses and they played what they wanted," the Italian added.

"After the first half we had, we didn't even deserve to go the changing room with a level score… but this is football and we're very, very happy," said Real defender Dani Carvajal, who scored the first goal.

Real's England midfielder Jude Bellingham described it as the best night of his life.

"I have always dreamed of playing in these games," Bellingham said.

"You go through life and there are so many people who say you cannot do things. I was alright until saw my mum and dad's face.

"My little brother is there and I'm trying to be a role model for him. I cannot put it into words. The best night of my life."

For Dortmund, it was another Champions League final loss at Wembley, which also hosted their 2013 defeat by Bayern Munich.

Dortmund defender Mats Hummels said his team had played with courage but lost to more ruthless opponents.

"They have been doing it for what feels 100 years like that," Hummels said.

Dortmund coach Edin Terzic said his side had lacked killer instinct.

"We could not be rewarded for our chances. But they were ice cold and they are deserved champions," he said.

Following the completion of the facility to host the African Games 2023, there have been concerns about how the stadium will be maintained considering the country's history of poor maintenance of sporting facilities.

"One of the major issues we have in Ghana is maintenance. It’s not just limited to public sporting facilities, but even private property also," Dr. Bitugu remarked, pointing out a widespread challenge that affects various sectors in the country.

Dr. Bitugu drew attention to research that underscores the effectiveness of maintenance when facilities are managed by educational institutions. "One thing, however, proven empirically in the research literature is that sporting facilities are best maintained when they are in educational institutions," he stated.

This research-backed approach is precisely why the University of Ghana is determined to set an example. "This is why the University of Ghana is going to prove to the whole world, and especially Ghanaians, that we have the ability and are competent to maintain this stadium to a level of excellence," Dr. Bitugu asserted.

A comprehensive maintenance plan has been developed to ensure the facility's longevity and functionality. "There is a maintenance concept that has been prepared and I’m sure that we’ll look back on this facility in a few years and be proud of the fantastic work that has been done to maintain it," Dr. Bitugu explained.

The stadium has already hosted many competitions since commissioning on March 1, 2024.

The two teams won on the road on matchday 32 of the 2023/24 Ghana Premier League season, registering wins over Asante Kotoko and Medeama SC.

Olympics were lucky not to have gone behind earlier in the game against the Porcupine Warriors after Steven Mukwala missed from the penalty spot in the 18th minute.

The Accra-based side then made their setpiece count in the 43rd minute as Raymond Oko Grippman scored to make it 1-0 for the visiting team, who went on to pick up all three points.

In Tarkwa, Ebenezer Abban scored a let winner for Lions who defeated Medeama to go 13th on the league table.

Prior to scoring the winner, Abban had missed from the spot after Bashir Hayford's men were awarded a penalty.

In other results, Berekum Chelsea were 2-0 winners over Real Tamale United while Dreams FC also recorded a 1-0 home win over Karela United.

Nsoatreman and Accra Lions played out a 1-1 draw.

The High Court (General Jurisdiction 2 ), presided over by Justice Forson Agyapong Baah committed the four to the custodial sentence after rejecting pleas to hand the convicts a non-custodial sentence for their transgressions.

Their incarceration is in relation to the case ; The Republic vs James Nunoo Mensah and others ex-parte, Herbert Mensah.

The four were incarcerated to restore the dignity and authority of the court, according to the judge.

They are; Abdul Aziz Issah, President of Greater Accra Rugby Association and board member; James Nunoo Mensah, former Vice President of Ghana Rugby; Michael Ako Wilson, board member; and Bismark Amponsah, General Secretary of the GRFU.

The complainant, Herbert Mensah, through his lawyer Dominic Brenya of Sam Okudzeto & Associates, filed the case of contempt against eight defendants including the incarcerated four after an interlocutory injunction order by the High Court to restrain them from organising meetings or elections or making defamatory publications in the name of GRFU went unheeded.

Three others who are staff of the Ghana Olympic Committee were acquitted and discharged while the case was discontinued against the 8th defendant.

The incarcerated four are part of members of the Ghana Rugby fraternity who recently organised an elective congress in December 2023 to elect new board members.

In 2021, the four were also part of a group that organised a special general meeting (SGM) at which they declared that they had sacked Herbert Mensah: former President of Ghana Rugby, and were acting as new board members.

Subsequently, Herbert Mensah filed a case at the High Court General Jurisdiction 2 in 2021, asking the court to declare their declarations null and void. This substantive case is pending at the high court.

The presiding judge in his ruling said that all these meetings and elections and public notices issued for these elections to be held by the four and their assigns constituted willful disregard for the authority of the court, which had previously injuncted them from doing so.

"The law of contempt was promulgated because of people like you," the judge declared in his ruling, adding, "You used tactics that undermined the authority of this honourable court and the administration of justice despite knowing that your actions are against the injunction placed on you." The judge warned the public to desist from disrespecting court orders.

Kingston stepped from his role following the defeat to Burkina Faso in the semifinal of the just-ended WAFU B U-17 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers.

The defeat ended hopes of Ghana qualifying for the next edition of the U-17 AFCON which extends the Black Starlets' absence from the competition to three.

Following his decision, the team subsequently lost the third-place playoff game against Nigeria which meant they finished fourth despite a good start to the tournament.

Speaking on Joy Prime, Armstrong-Mortagbe revealed the team was destabilised after the news of Kingston resigning.

"Laryea's project ran for about seven months...We started with the WAFU Zone B U-17 Championship here, 5-1 against Ivory Coast, next game 2-0. Everybody expected that we should be hopefully qualifying directly to the U-17 AFCON," he said.

"Unfortunately, the results didn't go our way thereafter. Laryea announced his intent to leave the role in the course of the tournament and I think that created a bit of instability around the team."

Ghana’s quest to reach the next global showpiece hinges on securing positive outcomes, as they currently sit in a precarious 4th place in Group I with one win after two matches.

Otto Addo has named 26 players to boost the nation’s hopes of clinching a spot at the World Cup, and among the chosen few is Leicester City’s scorching-hot winger, Fatawu Issahaku, who has been electrifying the pitch lately.

The youngster’s impressive form suggests he could be the missing jigsaw Coach Addo needs to solve the crucial upcoming puzzles.

His talent was never in doubt

From the outset, Fatawu was a precocious talent with a knack for imposing himself in games. “There was a day I saw him kicking a ball and I realised that he had something special in him," Fatawu's youth coach, Ibrahim Dauda, has told the BBC's George Addo Jnr.

After featuring for Steadfast FC in his hometown, Tamale, the attacker deservedly earned a big platform and seized the opportunity with both hands.

After a three-week spectacle of talents at the U-20 Africa Cup of Nations in March 2021, Fatawu was crowned the best player of the tournament. He netted twice and delivered stirring performances, leading Ghana to a triumphant victory. He has since not looked back.

He made a grand entrance into the Ghana Premier League with a sublime goal for Dreams FC against Asante Kotoko. He received the ball with a delicate touch, deftly dribbled past an onrushing defender, wove his way around three more, and slotted the ball into the net. This moment showcased his extraordinary technical prowess. In just five matches, Fatawu scored four goals and earned two Man of the Match awards, securing the NASCO Player of the Month honour eventually.

Recognising the need for a greater challenge, Fatawu left the local scene for Europe. After only a few games with Sporting Lisbon, his nimble footwork and dazzling performances caught the eye of 2015/16 English Premier League champions Leicester City. His stellar performance for the Foxes this past season has left many in awe. But those who knew him in time, say they are not surprised one bit.

“I think even when he was playing in the local league, there was one question, the person asked, who is the player I’ve seen in the local league?

“I remember I said, I mentioned Fatawu’s name, he’s somebody who can be a very good model,” Ghana’s all-time top scorer Asamoah Gyan said on the Halftime show.

Season of his life at Leicester

Eight months ago, Fatawu embarked on a journey that would redefine his destiny, signing for Leicester City. Little did he know this decision would become the crowning glory of his young career.

He walked onto the hallowed grounds of the King Power Stadium, humble yet hungry for growth. Despite his impressive background, he recognised there was still much to learn and improve upon. Fatawu spoke of his burning desire to absorb knowledge like a sponge soaking up water.

“To learn more is the most important thing,” he declared to the club's media after joining the Foxes in August, 2023.

Under the watchful eyes of his manager and former Manchester City assistant trainer Enzo Maresca, Fatawu's talent was transformed into a masterpiece. The young winger directly contributed to 19 goals for the Foxes in the just-ended season. His goal-scoring prowess was on full display after he hit a hat-trick against Southampton.

Yet, what truly set Fatawu apart was his enhanced creativity and decision-making. He created 32 big chances for the club in 40 matches during his debut season in the Championship. His defensive ability has also been honed and is impressive for a winger, outperforming even the highly-ranked Championship standout Crysencio Summerville. Fatawu capped his best-ever season by clinching Leicester’s Young Player of the Year award.

Unique outlet in current Black Stars

The latest squad released by coach Otto Addo comprises six wingers, and while they are certainly talented, Fatawu brings a distinct dynamism to the final attacking third of the senior national team.

Throughout his career, the former Sporting Lisbon forward has evolved into a quintessential inverted right winger, showcasing the skills and attributes essential for this role. His versatility across the front line, combined with his technical prowess, makes him standout.

This season, the former Dreams FC man has been nothing short of sensational. He has scored 6 goals and provided 13 assists, with a 54% dribbling success rate and an average of 1.7 key passes per game. These numbers are the third best in the latest squad (surpassed by Kamaldeen Sulemana and Osman Bukari; excluding Kudus, who often plays in midfield for Ghana).

Fatawu's defensive contributions have also been noteworthy, averaging 1.5 tackles per game and recovering the ball 3.7 times per match with Jordan Ayew boasting slightly higher defensive stats with 1.9 tackles per game and 4.4 ball recoveries.

However, it is the well-rounded contribution that makes Fatawu unique, and poised to dominate the wings, particularly the right flank. The former Steadfast player has significantly elevated his game, especially in decision-making - knowing when and where to run, when to shoot, and when to pass.

Unlike the old Fatawu, who was often predictable and tended to shoot as soon as he cut in on his favoured left foot from the edge of the box, the new Fatawu displays extraordinary confidence and versatility. He is now adept at taking on markers, spotting teammates in the box for crosses, or using them as decoys to produce curlers into the top corner. His precision with curlers has become a notable strength.

This season, marked by strong numbers, impressive defensive displays, and relentless determination on the pitch, has seen Fatawu blossom into a supremely talented, all-around player. As Ghana prepares for crucial matches against Mali on June 6 and the Central African Republic four days later, Fatawu's influence could be pivotal.

His skill set and current form make him a key player who can exploit defensive weaknesses and create scoring chances, ultimately securing victories and enhancing Ghana’s chances of reaching the next World Cup.

Ghana will face Mali on the road on June 6 in the first of two games in the upcoming international window. He named his squad for the two games on Wednesday, May 29.

The game against the Eagles will be the Black Stars' third of the qualifying series having already played two games with one win and one defeat.

The race to finish top of Group I is taking an interesting twist with Comoros currently the only team to have picked up all six points available.

Speaking of his target, Addo said: "The aim is to qualify. It will be difficult, especially in the away game with Mali. They have a very good squad."

"What I want to assess is the way we play. We will have good and bad times. We show that when we played against Nigeria and in the World Cup we played good football.

"At the end, it is a result sport. I will be judged by the results."

Ghana will face Mali on June 6 before facing the Central African Republic on June 10.

The team will begin camping for the two games on Thursday, May 30, and will be training at the University of Ghana Stadium.

Flops of the Season:

McCoist touched upon the expectations surrounding Andre Onana's arrival at Manchester United, stating, "Onana has been nothing like the signing everyone thought he would be for Man Utd." However, he refrained from labeling him as the 'flop of the season,' deeming it too harsh. Instead, he pointed out Moises Caicedo and Enzo Fernandez, expressing disappointment in their performance despite the significant investment—calling it "not great." McCoist leaned towards Caicedo over Onana for his underwhelming contribution.

Stars of the Season:

Amidst the flops, McCoist had high praise for Mohammed Kudus at West Ham, hailing him as magical and a breath of fresh air. He singled out Kudus as his "signing of the season so far," emphasizing the player's impactful performances. While considering potential candidates like Micky van de Ven and James Maddison, McCoist acknowledged their injury setbacks. Cole Palmer at Chelsea also earned recognition as a shining light but fell short of surpassing Kudus in McCoist's assessment.

The football pundit's insights provide fans with a nuanced perspective on player performances, sparking discussions about the highs and lows witnessed in the ongoing Premier League season. As the season unfolds, football enthusiasts eagerly await more standout moments and surprises from their favorite teams and players.

Former Black Stars player Samuel Inkoom opened the scoring for the Phobians in the fifth minute of the game, while Micheal Ohene Agyei Asamoah restored parity for Sharks who held on to secure a vital point.

Hearts with the point stay in the sixth position with 37 points while Elmina Sharks are nine points off safety with nine games to end the season.

Hearts started the first half on an impressive note as Inkoom curled in a beautiful free-kick just outside the box to give the home side the lead.

It was a relentless attacking play from the Phobians as they look to bounce back from last week's defeat against Kumasi Asante Kotoko.

Afriyie Barnieh should have doubled the lead for the Phobians halfway through the first half but his volley inside the penalty missed by a whisker.

Elmina Sharks barely threatened Hearts in the final third but did restore parity against the run-off of play through Micheal Asamoah who tapped in from close range after a beautiful assist from Ishmael Antwi.

Afriyie Barnieh who saw much of the ball in the first half should have put Hearts back in the lead from close range but his shot was impressively saved by goalkeeper Joseph Essam.

The first half ended one all.

Elmina Sharks started the second a fearless side as they struck the ball around impressively with Hearts on the back foot.

But it was Hearts who created the decent opportunities with Salim Adams coming close with one of his power drives from long range.

Elmina Sharks were very impressive with an hour gone as coach Samuel Boadu was forced to make three substitutions with Ibrahim Salifu, Agyenim Boateng and Frederick Ansah Botchway coming in.

But yet still it was the Sharks who looked the more dangerous in attack.

Gladson who was having a quiet game came close to restoring Hearts lead with a quarter of the game left but once again Joseph Essam pulled off one of the best saves of the season to deny the Hearts playmaker.

Hearts huffed and puffed for the winner, but the solid Sharks defence stood firm to secure a crucial point on the road.

Asante Kotoko suffered their third defeat of the Ghana Premier League season in a 2-1 away defeat to Real Tamale United on Sunday.

Ronald Frimpong and Victor Aidoo scored to give the home side a two-goal cushion before Cameroonian striker Franck Mbella Etouga pulled one back for the Porcupine Warriors.

Prosper Narteh Ogum’s side still top the league table despite the loss and have an eight-point gap heading into the matchday 25 round of games, as closest contenders Bechem United suffered a 3-2 away defeat to Eleven Wonders, missing an opportunity to close in on the Kumasi-based outfit.

Interestingly, Bechem went two goals up on the day through Augustine Okrah and Emmanuel Owusu but Laar Ibrahim’s late hat-trick turned things around for the home side, who occupy the 16th position on the table.

In third position are Aduana Stars, who were held to a 0-0 draw by 11th-placed Ashanti Gold in Dormaa.

In Bibiani, new boys Gold Stars beat Great Olympics 2-1, courtesy of goals from Yahya Adraman and Prince Opoku Agyemang after Maxwell Quaye gave the visitors in a 24th minute lead. While Olympics hold the fourth position, Gold Stars lie in the 12th spot.

It was not a good day for Medeama as they bowed to a 3-1 away defeat to Legon Cities, making little of Vincent Atinga’s strike as Abdul Rahman and Hans Kwoffie (two) sealed all three points for Cities who are ninth on the log. Medeama sit in fifth place.

Hearts of Oak move into the sixth position with Saturday’s 1-1 draw with rock-bottom Elmina Sharks after Michael Asamoah netted to cancel out Samuel Inkoom’s opener for the Phobians.

At the Kumasi Sports Stadium, Fredrick Asante’s first-half goal ensured a 1-0 away victory for Accra Lions over King Faisal. Lions place 10th on the table while Faisal find themselves just one spot above the relegation zone.

The score was not any different as Umar Bashiru netted to ensure a 1-0 triumph for Karela United over Dreams. The two sides are seventh and 13th, respectively, on the log.

In Sogakope, Wafa pipped Berekum Chelsea 3-2 thanks to goals from Michael Zuo, Sampson Agyapong and Emmanuel Agyemang. Henry Ainsu registered a double in consolation for Bibires who hold the eighth spot. Wafa are second from bottom.

The award penalty that made Ghana qualify to the playoffs has sparked a lot of controversy, with some South Africans accusing the referee of cheating them.

This was disclosed by former King Faisal radio representative Obeng Boadu, who currently resides in South Africa.

According to him, "The tension on Ghanaians here are very high. The South Africans have threatened to deal with Ghanaians here after their petition to Fifa."

“We are pleading with authorities to come to our aid here since things may become worse anytime soon. I don’t think Ghanaians are too safe as I speak to you.” he said.

On Monday, the South African FA announced that it had filed a complaint at FIFA and CAF for the match to be reviewed.

Austria international Alaba, 29, signed on a free transfer after his departure from Bayern Munich in May.

Ramos, who spent 16 years in Madrid, joined Paris St-Germain after the 35-year-old’s contract expired in June.

“We all know Ramos was here for a long time and wore this number, becoming the leader of this team,” Alaba said.

“But the truth is that yesterday I spoke to the club and they told me that right now it’s the only available squad number. I didn’t want to start asking other players if they wanted to swap.

“I’m honoured to wear the number four, it’s a source of great pride and motivation for me and I want to do it justice.

“But I’m not here to compare myself to other players or replace them, I’m here to be David Alaba.”

Ramos is Spain’s most-capped player and won five La Liga titles and four Champions Leagues during his time at Real Madrid.

Alaba, who has signed a five-year deal, won 10 Bundesliga titles, two Champions Leagues and six German Cups after coming through the youth system at Bayern Munich.

The versatile Austrian will be managed by Carlo Ancelotti at the Santiago Bernabeu, after the former Everton boss replaced Zinedine Zidane in June.

According to them, there is no rule in the constitution that warrants a ban of that magnitude to the former youth Olympic gold medalist for 6 years.

Princeworth KD Anane-Asare, who is also a representative of the Ghana Technical Universities Sports Association (GHATUSA), spoke on behalf of the concerned members in a press conference on Tuesday, July 21.

“There is nowhere in the constitution that shows Martha should’ve been banned”, he said.

“The whole thing started when His excellency the former president John Mahama handed a brown envelope to Martha. In the process of doing that, Doodo collected it and dropped it, the video is there, after the whole thing the mother asked Martha, where is the money? Because the mother and father were presented. Where is the money? He said he hasn’t got it. Then he asked the coach, Isaac Lamptey, were is the money? Coach Lamptey also says, I don’t have it so the mother herself went inside there and confronted Akpokavi and collected that money and came out, and that was it.”

He continued that, all allegations levelled against the 23-year-old are false and untrue.

“Others I don’t want to accuse but the truth of the matter is that there is nothing that Martha has done. They are saying Martha should apologize , Martha should do this, Martha refuse scholarship, Martha did that. They are all not true I’m telling you. They are not true, if they are true, let them come out with their facts, that’s all we’re saying. They should leave Martha alone.”

He ended by saying that, had the GAA left Martha alone, they would’ve gained a good image because Martha would’ve won another gold in this year’s Olympics.

“Martha should’ve been in the Olympics by now and maybe God willing we would’ve gotten another gold and this is the smart thing that they did not observe. It would’ve brought reputation to GAA for coaching this girl but they didn’t do that. Instead, envy and all these things are happening it’s so sad.

Former President of the Ghana Athletics Association (GAA), George Halden Lutterodt says, what the GAA has done to one time Olympic gold medalist, Martha Bissa is unforgivable.#JoySports pic.twitter.com/DJ2hX82aNH— #JoySports (@JoySportsGH) July 21, 2021

Bissah is Ghana’a only athlete who won gold at the girls’ 800m race at the Youth Olympic Game in 2014 but has since been suspended indefinitely by the GAA headed by Professor Francis Dodoo in 2016 for indiscipline and peddling lies against the GAA.

The former FIFA Council member and CAF 1st Vice President was discharged on March 11, 2021, by Justice Comfort Kwasiwor Tasiame of the Criminal court 4 of the Accra High Court after the Republic requested more time to file a witness statement.

The judge rejected the request of the Republic on the grounds that the case has been before the court for a year without the witness statement filed despite consistent adjournment.

She noted that “…the prosecution has the whole state apparatus behind her to file a witness statement without” the continuous back and forth.

Justice Comfort Kwasiwor Tasiame in her ruling said “justice delayed they say is justice denied.”

“I think in this modern times there can be a way out for prosecution who has the whole state apparatus behind her to file a witness statement without us going and coming.”

Part of the ruling suggested that the prosecution needs more time to have all pieces of evidence available for case management to commence and advised that, they put their ‘house in order’ and return when they are ready.

“I think the prosecution may need a longer time to put their house in order. Justice delayed they say Justice denied. Just is two-way traffic for prosecution and accused as well.

“It’s been one year since we set out to do case Management Conference but due to the excuse by the learned counsel for the Republic, that they have a witness statement to file, we kept adjourning this case till today.

“I think in this modern times there can be a way out for prosecution who has the whole state apparatus behind her to file a witness statement without us going and coming.

“As it stands now, I have no option other than to discharge accused persons. Any time prosecution is ready, they can do the needful. Accused persons are discharged,” Justice Comfort ruled.

Counsel for the Republic Victoria Asieduaa, proceeded to Criminal Court 2 of the High Court on March 24, 2021, to have the case heard afresh.

The counsel for Nyantakyi filed an opposition against the move of the Republic, requesting that the case be taken back to Court 4, but on June 7, Justice Elfreda A. Dankyi of Court ruled that the case will be heard before her with the same charges.

An initial date of June 23, 2021, was set for case processes to begin, but it was adjourned to June 29, 2021, where the same charges leveled against the two last year, were tabled before the court for the hearing.

They were granted bail again, to the sum of GHC 1 million with three sureties just as it was in 2020.

Kwesi Nyantakyi and Abdulai Alhassan in 2014 were slapped with three charges including fraud by the Accra High Court in March last year.

Two other charges were conspiracy to commit fraud and fraud for their roles in a documentary dubbed number 12 by Tiger Eye PI.

Draper was given a wildcard for his senior SW19 debut and stunned the Serb top seed with a confident start.

It was the first set that 34-year-old Djokovic had dropped in the Wimbledon first round since 2010.

But the five-time champion came through 4-6 6-1 6-2 6-2 on Centre Court.

Djokovic will play South Africa’s Kevin Anderson – who he beat in the 2018 final – in the second round.

“It feels great seeing everyone and being back on the most special, or sacred, tennis court in the world,” said Djokovic, who is aiming to equal Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer’s all-time men’s record of 20 major titles.

“It has been very difficult times for everyone but I’m very glad the sport is back, hopefully you guys enjoyed it and will enjoy the next couple of weeks.”

The Championships has returned after being cancelled last year because of the coronavirus pandemic and Centre Court is allowed to hold 50% of its 15,000 capacity as part of the government’s event research programme.

That led to a special moment before Djokovic and Draper walked out in the opening match on Centre. The crowd gave a spontaneous and prolonged standing ovation when it was announced NHS workers and scientists responsible for developing vaccines were sat in the Royal Box.

Is a new British star born? Draper thrills Centre Court

Regarded as one of Britain’s brightest talents, 19-year-old Draper was given the toughest test in the men’s game with the plum draw against Djokovic.

He has tasted success at the All England Club before, having reached the final of the boys’ singles in 2018, but was making his senior debut after being given a wildcard.

That came just before an eye-catching run at Queen’s last week, where he earned a first ATP Tour match win and showed on a bigger stage why he is highly regarded.

Draper stunned Italian third seed Jannik Sinner – one of the sport’s best young talents – in his opening match, backing that up with another win over Kazakhstan’s Alexander Bublik. He then lost to fellow Briton Cameron Norrie in the quarter-finals.

Already seemingly self-assured, that run further boosted his confidence that he could compete with the world’s best and he said he would aim to show Djokovic what he had got.

Certainly that happened in the first set, where his solid and sometimes spectacular backhand troubled Djokovic.

Djokovic was also bothered by the slick surface, slipping over several times on the baseline but able to avoid any serious issues.

The decisive break for 2-1 came with a whopping backhand winner which dusted the line and with Djokovic unable to convert any of seven break points, the young Briton kept his nerve to serve out the set on an excited Centre Court.

Ultimately, and not surprisingly, he could not maintain that level as Djokovic quickly won the next three sets.

But there had already been enough from Draper to suggest he has the talent to succeed at the top level, as well as winning over some new British fans and drawing praise from his illustrious opponent.

Djokovic warmly placed his arm around the Briton’s shoulder at the net and gave him some words of encouragement before Draper walked off to a standing ovation.

“He definitely deserves a round of applause, he’s a youngster, only 19, and hadn’t played too much prior to Queen’s,” said Djokovic.

“Walking on to Wimbledon Centre Court for the first time, I think he has done extremely well and played maturely. I wish him all the best for the rest of his career.”
Boulter, Broady and Murray reach second round

British 24-year-old Katie Boulter fought back from a set down to beat American Danielle Lao 6-7 (6-8) 6-3 6-4 and progress to the second round.

Having lost a tight first-set tie-break in which she saved two of three set points, Boulter, a wildcard entry, battled back impressively as she recovered a 3-1 deficit in the deciding set – winning five of the final six games.

Next up for Boulter, who is ranked 219 in the world, is Belarusian second seed Aryna Sabalenka. The world number four dominated Monica Niculescu in the first match of the 2021 Championships, winning 6-1 6-4.

Also in the women’s draw, Boulter’s compatriots Heather Watson, 29, Katie Swan, 22, and Jodie Burrage, 22, all suffered first-round defeats.

After her match was moved onto Court One, Watson dominated the first set against Kristie Ahn, but allowed the American to fight her way back as day turned into night, eventually losing 2-6 7-6 (7-3) 8-6.

Ahn will play compatriot Sloane Stephens next as she takes her place in the Wimbledon second round for the first time.

American 23rd seed Madison Keys triumphed 6-3 6-4 against Swan on court three after the Briton lost serve early in both sets.

Meanwhile, wildcard Burrage lost 6-2 6-1 to Lauren Davis despite a positive start which saw her break the American – ranked 183 places higher – in the opening game.

In the men’s draw, Andy Murray made his Wimbledon singles return with a dramatic 6-4 6-3 5-7 6-3 victory against 24th seed Nikoloz Basilashvili.

Liam Broady also progressed, recording a straight-set victory over Italian Marco Cecchinato.

Broady, 27, won 6-3 6-4 6-0 to set up a meeting with Argentine ninth seed Diego Schwartzman or France’s Benoit Paire.

Jay Clarke will resume his opening match against Belarusian Egor Gerasimov on Tuesday, with the Briton trailing 3-6 6-3 7-6 (7-5) when play was suspended.

The former Inter Milan and Crystal Palace boss replaced Ronald Koeman last summer after his appointment at Barcelona but was surprisingly knocked out of this summer’s major tournament in the round of 16.

De Boer’s Netherlands deal would have been automatically renewed had he secured a quarter-final berth, but the 51-year-old told the Dutch FA (KNVB) he was unwilling to continue, admitting his “goal has not been achieved”.

“In anticipation of the evaluation, I have decided not to continue as national coach,” De Boer said via a KNVB statement. “The goal has not been achieved, that is clear.

“When I was approached to become national coach in 2020, I thought it was an honour and a challenge, but I was also aware of the pressure that would come upon me from the moment I was appointed.

“That pressure is only increasing now, and that is not a healthy situation for me, nor for the squad in the run-up to such important matches for Dutch football on their way to World Cup qualification.

“I want to thank everyone, of course the fans and the players. My compliments also to the management who have created a real top sports climate here on campus.”

De Boer was appointed Netherlands boss in September last year but failed to win any of his first four matches in charge, becoming the first permanent Dutch boss to do so.

He led the Oranje to an impressive Group C campaign at Euro 2020 where they picked up three wins out of three against Ukraine, Austria and North Macedonia.

But they failed to reach the final eight of the competition after goals from Tomas Holes and Patrick Schick, paired with a red card to Matthijs De Ligt, gave the Czechs a shock win.

“The choice for Frank turned out differently than we had hoped,” said KNVB director of football Nico-Jan Hoogma. “A successor must now be found by me, after good internal consultation.

“It is imperative to do so, because on September 1st we will be playing an important qualifier against Norway in Oslo. We will now evaluate further, broader than just the coach, sharpen the profile, and do the work that can be expected of us here.”

Sweden, to the surprise of many, took Group E by storm, earning seven points from a possible nine with Spain and Poland failing to beat the Blue and Yellow.

Ukraine, despite losing two games, sneaked in as one of the best third placed teams in the group stages and hope to break the hearts of the Sweden fans.
Sweden to advance to quarterfinals

Sweden have shown some real quality in the tournament so far and are expected to triumph over a tricky Ukraine side on Tuesday.

Real Sociedad striker Isak has been a shinning light for the Blue and Yellow so far. The young and promising finisher will be depended on for the goals.

Ukraine have West Ham United’s Andriy Yarmolenko in their ranks alongside Manchester City man Zinchenko but Sweden have what it takes to win this one.
The odds

Sweden are slight favorites to win the game, with their odds priced at 2.40 by Betway. Ukraine, in comparison, have their odds pinned at 3.16. A draw has been priced at 3.07.

The Eleven is to One boys are currently rooted at the bottom of the league with 26 points after 31 games.

Since being promoted to the Ghana Premier League in 2013 after defeating Danburt FC, the Accra-based club have enjoyed some impressive spells.

In their debut top flight season, they finished 8th in the league and were runners up in the 2013/14 FA Cup.

The rise of Inter Allies continued as they climbed into the top six the following season.

Performances dropped for the next two seasons as the club continued to sell their best players. They narrowly escaped relegation finishing 12th and 13th in the 2015/16 and 2017 season respectively.

Their fortunes changed as the club rose once again to the top 6 the next season. However, halfway through the season, the league was cancelled after Anas’ number 12 expose.

In the 2019/20 truncated season, Victorien Adebayor and Samuel Armah took the league by storm contributing to 18 goals. Inter Allies comfortably sat in 11th position before the league was cancelled due to Covid-19.

The club headed into the current season selling both Adebayor and Armah. The effect was immediate as they struggled for goals in the early part of the season.

Inter Allies picked up just two wins in their first 14 games and looked destined for the drop.

The Accra-based club fell to the bottom of the league on matchday 10 and haven’t moved since.

Three different coaches have had stints to try and save Inter Allies’ season with Henrik Lehm who started the season later passing the mantle to Dani Mujkanovic. Felix Aboagye was appointed in the second round and despite his good efforts, it looks like the club left it a little too late.

Eight players were signed during the mid-season break including former striker Armah. There was a sign of resurgence in the second round as they picked 12 points from their first 10 games. However, four consecutive defeats means the journey at the pinnacle of Ghana football ends for the Eleven is to One.

With three games to go, a strong finish could ignite hope of Inter Allies returning to the top flight sooner rather than later.

Kotoko, who needed victory to go level on points with Hearts of Oak, started well and were rewarded with an opener through Emmanuel Gyamfi.

The Kotoko captain tapped the ball into the net from close range after a knockdown by Evans Adomako

Alex Aso benefitted from some poor goalkeeping to roll the ball into the back of the net after Abalora failed to deal with a low cross.

The Porcupine Warriors responded with immediate effect as Gyamfi turned provided this time round assisting Adomako, who was starting his first game for the Reds.

Inter Allies kept the pressure on in the second half and got their second equaliser through Andy Okpe who scored from a corner to silence the Kotoko fans.

However, Appau’s excellent header in the 69th minute, after an expertly delivered in-swinger from Fabio Gama, earned Kotoko an important victory that sends them level with Hearts at the top of the table.

Though Hudson-Odoi has played three times for the English National team, he is still eligible to switch to Ghana after the eligibility rules were revised by FIFA.

According to the new FIFA rules, players can now switch national teams provided they are eligible to represent them as long as they have played no more than three matches (including friendlies), none of the matches were in the final tournament of the FIFA World Cup or confederation competition, and they all happened before the player turned 21.

Okraku admitted that the technical team is collaborating with Ghana’s government to land Hudson-Odoi.

“We’ve had discussions that have centered beyond even playing for Ghana, He has a crazy ambition of helping kids in this country, and we looking forward to working with Odoi, his entire family and many others who are very interested in representing their country.

“There are loads of them who ply their trade beyond the shores of Ghana or were born not in Ghana but interested in representing Ghana.

“We’re going to work with the technical team, We’re going to work with the political authorities to ensure that we get every big talent that has the capacity to represent our nation, Our vision is to make our Black Stars and all other national teams dominant on the African Continent,” he added

The Chelsea star who chose Ghana as a holiday destination paid a courtesy on the president Akufo-Addo at the Jubilee House.

After that meeting Akufo-Addo called on the sports minister to find ways of getting Hudson-Odoi play for Ghana.

In a Facebook post, president Akufo-Addo said: “Amongst others, I urged the Minister for Youth and Sports to explore the possibility of having Callum switch nationality and play for the Black Stars.”

Hudson-Odoi is part of a number of UK-born players on the radar of the Black Stars, the other targets include Arsenal striker Eddie Nketiah and Brighton & Hove Albion fullback Tariq Lamptey.

The Ghana Premier League record champions have been selected by the Ghana Football Association (GFA) to represent the country in the next edition of the CAF Champions League.

Determined to enjoy a good campaign, the Reds are hoping that the President will announce the easing of restrictions on football that will allow clubs to return to training in August.

While the club waits for the president to address the country at the end of July, they have planned to conduct Covid-19 testing for the entire playing body as well as the technical team.

According to Kumasi-based Oyerepa FM, Asante Kotoko players have been informed to get ready to go through a thorough medical test including COVID-19.

The world governing body has proposed the idea that the upcoming European summer transfer window could be extended to the end of the year.

According to a report from today's paper edition of the Milano based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, the idea could become a reality.

This will also have an impact on the Ghanaian transfer window as it could also be moved by FIFA because of the suspension of league matches in the country.

The report details how the World Leagues Forum has asked for more flexibility, with the European Club Association asking for a permanent transfer window.

Each country would be able to choose their own rules, with FIFA continuing to play the role as the supervisor.

The idea is still only an idea for the time being, the report continues and will need to be further discussed before any concrete theory is created.

There would also have to be changes to other aspects of the transfer market, such as loan deals with buy options or obligations to buy attached.

Inter have multiple players on loan, such as Mauro Icardi, who could benefit from the extended window.

The Phobians are scheduled to head to Accra after lunch on Friday to finalise preparations for Sunday's Normalisation Committee Special Commiittee Tier 1 semi-final match at the Accra Stadium.

The club embarked on a secret camp in the Virgin City Hotel on the outskirts of Cape Coast on Monday evening and trained on the Amissano Catholic Seminary field.

According to a close source, morale in the Hearts camp is high and the players are ready for Sunday's match.

The source said Coach Kim Grant has no injury worries and was looking forward to another impressive performance from his men. It disclosed that the mood in camp was boosted with the return of dependable defender, Mohammed Alhassan, from the Black Stars camp in Dubai.

Alhassan joined his teammates in camp on Tuesday evening after arriving in the country earlier in the day, alongside his Kotoko counterpart, Abdul Fatawu.

However, Fatawu joined his teammates in the club's Asante Mampong camping base on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, unlike Hearts, Kotoko are battling against the fitness of some key players, including Burkinable striker, Sogne Yacouba, ahead of the big game.

Yacouba, who got injured during the Otumfuo Cup match against ASEC Mimosas, has missed the club's last three games.

The rasta-haired player only began light training this week as Kotoko hope for a miracle to enable their prized striker partner Fatawu upfront against Hearts.

Kotoko are expected to leave Mampong for Accra on Saturday.

In a statement, the striker said he will also not be available for the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations tournament in Egypt.

“Upon consultation with my family and team, and as an active footballer and captain of the National team, if the decision of the coach is to give captaincy of the tournament to another player while I am named in the team for the tournament, I wish to recuse myself from the tournament,” Gyan said in a statement.

He added: “I also wish to retire from the national team permanently; not pretending my presence would not fuel the purported undermining the country has seen under my captaincy.

“I would continue to serve the country Ghana in other endeavors as a businessman through various investments.”

Gyan made his international debut at the age of 17 and scored on his senior International debut for Ghana against Somalia on 19 November 2003 in the 90th minute. Since then, he has gone on to make 106 appearances for the Black Stars scoring a total of 51 goals

As the all-time leading goalscorer of the Ghana national team, with 51 goals, he represented Ghana at 2006, 2010 and 2014 FIFA World Cups. With 6 goals, he is the top African goalscorer in the history of the World Cup.

Gyan has also represented Ghana at the 2004 Summer Olympics and in seven Africa Cup of Nations in 2006, 2008, 2010, 2012, 2013, 2015 and 2017, helping them finish in third-place in 2008 and runner-up in 2010 and 2015.

After a goalless draw in normal time, it had to be decided on penalties and Nigeria came up tops.

They converted four of their five penalty kicks with Ghana missing two and scoring two.

Both teams met at the same stage last year with Ghana emerging as winners through penalties and eventually won the competition.

The Super Falcons of Nigeria will now play host Ivory Coast in the final of the tournament.

However, coach of Black Queens, Mercy Quarcoo Tagoe will feel proud of her team, having fought so hard to reach this stage.

Hearts, with 22 points, will go into the match on the strength of a 2-1 away victory over Cape Coast Ebusua Dwarfs last Sunday, while Karela United, who are on 21 points, made a 2-0 light work on WAFA at home last Sunday.

With just a point separating them, both clubs are expected to push to the limit to give the fans their money’s worth and something to remember in this violence-infested Normalisation Committee (NC) Special Competition.

The Phobians will count on home advantage as Kim Grant’s charges will quickly want to bury the goalless draw nightmare which befell them against a 10-man Liberty Professionals side in their last midweek encounter.

Away from this epic clash, other interesting Zone B encounters will see Ebusua Dwarfs playing host Dreams FC at the Carl Reindorf Park at Dansoman, while Elmina Sharks trek to Sogakope to engage WAFA in another exciting game.

Bottom-placed Inter Allies will play host to Liberty Professionals at the Tema Sports Stadium with a mission to salvage some points to improve upon their dwindling fortunes.

In Zone A, leaders Medeama Sporting Club will take a rest tomorrow and watch from the sidelines how second-placed Asante Kotoko fare against rejuvenated Eleven Wonders at the Baba Yara Stadium.

Coach Samuel Boadu’s lads, who are atop the log with 19 points, are four clear points ahead of Kotoko who have 15 points.

That is why the supporters of Kotoko would expect nothing but a home win from Coach Charles Akonnor’s men to close the gap after losing 0-1 away to Ashantigold last Sunday.

Aduana Stars will also have an arduous task against Ashantigold at home tomorrow, while at the Berekum Golden City Park, Chelsea will battle Bechem United in another cagey affair.
