The President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo made the pronouncement in Tamale Saturday at the 2018 General Congregation of the UDS. He indicated that the bill leading to the conversion of the university had been gazetted and was currently with the Attorney General’s Department for forwarding to parliament for its passage. The pronouncement by the President WatchGhana.Com learnt has sparked extemporaneous celebrations among students of the Wa Campus of UDS and residents of Upper West region, who see the conversion as long overdue. The conversion of the Wa Campus of the UDS into an autonomous university has received several political promises from successive governments. There have several petitions, press conferences, agitations and demonstrations by Chiefs, Concerned Residents and Students alike in a bid to remind governments to take action for the conversion. It could be recalled that, several residents in the Upper West region on November 3, 2018 poured out to the principal streets of the regional capital, Wa, to register their displeasure on the purported move being taken by the authorities of the UDS to realign some programmes at the Wa Campus to the Tamale campus. The decision, they described as deliberate attempt by the top hierarchy of the UDS to sabotage the Wa campus and deny it of being converted in to an autonomous University. The said demonstration brought together, former DCEs, politicians from the various political parties in the region, traders, trotro drivers as well as landlords and landladies within the regional capital to support the movement against the realignment of the programs. However, President Akufo-Addo has settled the matter and gone ahead to pronounce the UDS Navrongo Campus also as University of Technology and Applied Science. This means the people of Upper East Region will also have an independent university.
