School Feeding Secretariat Trains Trainers on Nutrition, Hygiene

The Management of the Ghana School Feeding Programme (GSFP) under the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection (MoGCSP) has organized a two day’s training of trainers’ workshop for key stakeholders of the programme.

The trainers are being trained at the workshop to enable them to train or transfer the knowledge acquired to the various School Health Education Programme (SHEP) officers and District Desk Officers (DDOs) who will subsequently train Caterers and cooks of the GSFP in the various regions. 

Being funded by the World Food Programme (WFP) and with technical support from the Partnership for Child Development (PCD) and YEDENT, the workshop is under the theme: “Building Capacity to Enhance Nutrition in School Feeding”. 

Topics being treated include; Nutrition and Health for School aged children, Business and Financial Management Ethics (Book and Records Keeping), Food Safety Measures and Hygiene and Innovative Ways of Improving School Meals among others.

Speaking in an interview with WatchGhana.Com, the Deputy National Coordinator of the Ghana School Feeding Programme, Mrs. Gertrude Quashigah said that the workshop was very important to ensuring that the GSFP programme becomes better. She said that the targeted participants were key in promoting quality standards in the programme and also ensuring its sustainability. According to Mrs. Quashigah, those being trained were handed the responsibility to train other officers at the Regional and District levels who would also transfer the knowhow to the caterers of GSFP in the communities. Currently, the GSFP programme is benefiting over 2.8 million pupils in 9,495 schools representing 62% of the deprived schools in Ghana. The Deputy National Coordinator of the GSFP indicated that the trainers are expected to also train the over 9,700 caterers and 19,400 cooks under the programme. The training for the Caterers which date is yet to be announced will take place in three regions namely; Brong Ahafo, Eastern and Central regions. The Participants expressed their gratitude to the Management of GSFP and the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection for fashioning out measures to improve the quality and also ensure the sustainability of the School Feeding programme.
