Chiefs in N/R are all farmers of Planting for Food- Minister

Traditional rulers in the Northern Region are said to have been the major beneficiaries of the government's Planting for Food and Jobs programme.

According to Northern Regional Minister, Salifu Saeed, the Chiefs have taken keen interest and are participating fully as farmers in the programme even more than the ordinary farmers in the region.

In welcoming the President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and potential award winners to Northern Region for the 2018 National Farmers Day celebration in Tamale, Mr Saeed conveyed the gratitude of the chiefs and farmers to the President for his vision.

"Mr. President all the chiefs who have lined up here today have asked me to extend their appreciation to you for the numerous flagship programmes you have introduced in the agricultural sector; and that they own bigger farms under the planting for food programme than any other persons and I need to let you know".

The Regional Minister also indicated that the people of the region could not be more grateful to the president for the numerous development and social interventions such as the Northern Development Authority (NDA), the Planting for Food and Jobs, One Village One Dam, construction of modern warehouses, tractor services, agricultural extension services etc.

The Northern Regional capital, Tamale is a host to hundreds of deserving farmers who are nominated for various awards at the National Farmers Day celebration.

It is under the theme: " Agriculture: Moving Ghana Beyond Aid".

The National Farmers Day is commemorated each year on the first Friday of December to honour the nation's gallant farmers and fishers.

This yearâ€™s activities started with a National Agricultural Fair from Thursday, November 29, which hit its climaxed on Friday, December 7, at the Aliu Mahama Sports Stadium in Tamale, Northern Region.

Five categories of winners from each Region â€“ the Regional Best Farmers, First Runner-Up, Second Runner-Up, Regional Best Agricultural Extension Agent, and Regional Best Fisherman, would be honoured by the President at the National Celebration.
