GNFS sets up committee to investigate two market fires in Kumasi.

The Ghana National Fire Service has set up a three member committee to investigate the recent fire outbreaks at the Kumasi Central market and the Asafo market.

The committee is made up of DCFO Kwaku Manu Afful, Director of Operations at the Ghana National Fire Service; ACFO Joshua Nguah; Ashanti Regional Commander of the Ghana National Fire Service; and DOII Rashid Nisawu, Kumasi Metro Fire Commander,

The Committee, chaired by DCFO Kwaku Manu Afful has been given seven days to present its report.

Chief Fire Officer of the Ghana National Fire Service, Mr Edwin Ekow Blankson, made this known in an interview with the media when he visited the Kumasi Central market and Asafo market fire scenes to assess the extent of damage caused.

While describing the Kumasi fire outbreaks as an unprecedented, he said the GNFS has recorded 17 fire outbreaks in the past four days which the major ones are the central market and the Asafo market fires.

He said the service has been able to pinpoint certain things that might have caused the central market fire but expressed fears that reconstruction works that have started on the burnt area by the traders may temper with evidence to unravel the actual cause of the fire.

Mr Blankson said the source of the first fire that gutted the Asafo market on the Easter Saturday is known, adding that invitation has been extended to a person who first saw the start of the fire to come and assist in investigations.

He said the second fire that ravaged the Asafo market is a bit suspicious.
