The high hopes of most churches in Ghana to see the lifting of the ban on public gathering by the President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has been dashed once again. The President in his 9th address to the nation, rather extended the ban on public gathering including all religious activities, festivals, funerals, workshops and seminars till May 31, 2020.
The extension according to President Nana Addo takes effect on Monday, May 11, 2020 in pursuant to the Executive Instrument (EI) 64 as part of measures to combat the spread of the deadly Coronavirus pandemic.“There will continue to be a ban on public gatherings such as holding of conferences, workshops, parties, night clubs, drinking spots, festivals, political rallies, religious activities, sporting events. Al educational facilities private and public, continue to remain closed. The is still a ban on funerals, other than private burials with not more than 25 persons. It is noteworthy that the police is arresting and prosecution persons irrespective of their status in society who flout these regulations,” he stressed.
Many churches have questioned the President’s continuous enforcement of the ban on religious activities whereas markets across the country with large patronage remain open.
The Ghana Medical Association also holds a different view as they insist the ban on public gathering is maintained.
Ghana has so far recorded 4,700 confirmed cases of COVID-19 with 494 recoveries and 22 deaths.
