Stop Creating Tension In Ghana-House of Chiefs To EC, Political Parties

Members of the National House of Chiefs are calling for an immediate end to the raving intimidation, threats of anarchy, mayhem and war that had engulfed the airwaves by some top politicians in recent times.

The House could not comprehend why there should be so much tension in Ghana at the time when the people were confronted with a lot of challenges as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, CSM epidemic, flooding and joblessness among others.

In a statement issued in Accra 30th May, 2020 and signed by the President, Togbe Afede XIV and his Vice, Daasebre Kwebu Ewusi VII, the National House of Chiefs, said that the “central to the escalating tension is the decision of the Electoral Commission (EC) to compile a new voters’ register”.

The statement bemoaned that, the EC had failed to honour invitations to the National House of Chiefs, when the traditional leaders wanted the opportunity to promote dialogue in the interest of peace.

It called on the EC to make free, fair and peaceful conduct of the 2020 general elections its primary objective, and ensure that no qualified Ghanaian was disenfranchised.

“We all have to remember that power is not exercised in a vacuum, and so it would be naive of anyone to think that a constitutionally created “independent body” has unbridled power. That cannot be the intention of the framers of our constitution”.

The National House of Chiefs called on the people to have sober reflection, an honest evaluation of Ghana’s progress over the past 63 years, and commit themselves to the ideals that had inspired the founding fathers.

The statement emphasized that the chiefs had the responsibility, and the duty, to speak objectively on matters affecting the nation, and in defense of the national interest.

“So, at this crucial time, we owe a sacred duty to our people to remind all of us about the “pledge to be faithful and loyal to Ghana, our motherland. We need to give substance to their claim that the black man is capable of managing his own affairs”.

The National House of Chiefs expressed the need to work together to strengthen the peace, and create harmonious living conditions in Ghana, so that xenophobic isolation abroad would not be preferred by “our people”.

They therefore called on all Ghanaians to subordinate their individual interest and political party loyalty to the national desire for peace, unity and development.
