UWR/Kukpali community gets a mechanized water system

Residents of Kukpali in the Wa West district last Sunday morning expressed joy and satisfaction over the installation of a £ 4000 small area water facility they received from the Sahara Advocates of Change through the Ghana Outlook charity programme.

The facility which has a 1000 litre capacity storage tank and a mechanised borehole is expected to serve the community of over seven hundred population that has been abandoned for several years without any source of potable water.

In a short message from sponsors of the project, programme manager Lina Beneb, explained the gesture is the benevolence of some citizens in the UK who believe that such essential utility as portable water should be available to people in deprived areas and acknowledged the Headmaster of the Kukpali primary school Mr Denis Salia for inviting them to support the community.

She added that a member of Ghana Outlook visited the community earlier this year to ascertain the situation and upon return to the UK recommended the Kukpali community indeed needs help.

‘‘One of the trustees of Ghana Outlook visited your community earlier this year, he talked with your elders and listened to your request for help. His name is Richard Galford and he returned to the UK and persuaded Ghana Outlook, that Kukpali is a strong community and deserve our support’’ Lina Beneb added.

She also called on the residents to take proper care of the facility and promised to do more in the community for greater achievements.

Contractors of the facility Rabash used the sitting to edge on the residents to control the machines with much attention to preventing damages. He said the equipment’s needed to be used properly to avoid the unnecessary cost of electricity. They however assured to correct some constructional defects that were noticed at the ceremony.

The Head Teacher of Kukpali Primary, Mr Denis Salia was, however, grateful to the donors for the kindness shown to the community. He said even though it’s his mandate to teach in the community, he also thought of bringing development to the area as he saw Kukpali as a seriously underdeveloped community that needs attention.

Mr Salia added that six years ago when he was posted to the community, he was left with mixed feeling about what awaited him in the area. He said access to potable water which is a necessity to sustain all forms of life the world over was nothing he could brag of in the Kukpali community.

‘‘The people of Kukapli have long been denied the very essence of clean water in its crucial role as in drinking, bathing and washing. I am however happy to announce that the pupils and people of Kukpali community would now enjoy a better life with every household now going to enjoy the services of this new water supply system’’ he added.

He commended the efforts of the donors and also disclosed other plans he had put before Ghana Outlook for consideration. He said teacher accommodation in the area would enable them to stay in the community and serve better, hence the intentions to renovate an abandoned school block into staff accommodation, which was at a very advanced stage for consideration.

The headteacher, however, called on the community members to take proper care of the facility.

The water station is located in the school compound after several efforts in finding a water bed within the community after drilling dry at two deferent locations.

The residents who were grateful for the gesture recounted how terrible they have survived over the years drinking from streams and dams during the rainy seasons and how terrible it gets in the dry seasons as an age-long borehole broke down several years ago with no capacity for repairs.

‘‘We are happy for this tape water. We used to distil our water with ash just to drink. I call on my colleague women to keep the facility well’’ Takpoma, a community member.

Miss Demeyi a student had this to say ‘‘on behalf of my fellow students we are happy for the kindness shown us by good people. May God bless them for us’’

A five-member management committee was inaugurated to better manage to affairs of the water station.

In attendance was a representative of the Education Director of the Wa West District, the NPP Parliamentary candidate whiles the Assembly Member did not turn up for the function.
