2020 Election: Henry Djaba Foundation Trains PWDs, Women As Peace Ambassadors

The Henry Djaba Memorial Foundation in partnership with the Canada Fund for Local Initiative is organizing series of capacity building workshops for some selected women and persons with disability (PWDs) to serve as Peace Ambassadors before, during and after the upcoming Ghana’s presidential and parliamentary elections.

The women and the PWDs would also serve as peer educators, champions for peace, encourage people to go out to vote on the day of election; serve as polling agents, party agents and any other roles men or abled persons can do in the electoral processes.

Speaking at the opening of a two day’s capacity building training workshop at Amasaman in the Ga West Municipality in the Greater Accra Region, the Executive Director of the Henry Djaba Memorial Foundation, Dr. Otiko Afisah Djaba said that over 550 women and PWDs are expected to receive the training.

She noted that the training workshop has first been held for over 200 women and PWDs within the Accra Metropolitan area.

She said that from Amasaman, the training would move to Madina in the La Nkwantanang Madina Municipality where the capacity of about 200 women and PWDs would be built by the Foundation.

Dr. Otiko Djaba indicated that the workshop empower the participants (women and PWDs) to become more visible, active, vociferous, and ultimately be involved in the processes leading to the December 7 election.

Women in Ghana she indicated represent over 51.7% of the population while PWDs constitute 0.57%.

She spoke strongly against the unending marginalization and discrimination against women and PWDs in the social, economic and political activities in Ghana.

The former Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection thus called on the Electoral Commission to ensure that all the processes leading to the December 7, 2020 elections did not discriminate against or post threat to PWDs, the aged, pregnant women and other vulnerable groups.

Dr. Otiko Djaba disclosed that her Foundation was working closely with some key traditional rulers, security agencies, NCCE, CHRAJ, Information Service Department, Social Welfare, District Assemblies and other relevant duty-bearers to ensure the realization of their objective.
