Fifty women farmers in the Upper Manya Krobo District of the Eastern Region have taken delivery of 500 cockerels for free. It was to help empower then in their poultry production as an additional source of income to their main crop and plant farming activities. They are also to raise them well to cross their local birds so that the offsprings can grow bigger to sell well in market.
The gesture is part of the Modernising Agriculture in Ghana (MAG) Program, a five - year budgetary support from the Canadian government to Ghana for the enhancement of agriculture in the country. The District Director of the Department of Agriculture, Hilary Alagbo said the distribution is part of the department's work plan for the year 2021. He assured the beneficiaries that Agric Extension Officers would regularly visit them with good animal husbandry practices.
A beneficiary Regina Padi thanked the Agric Department for coming to their aid and said the gesture would go a long way to improve their economic lives. She also advised that people should not solely depend on a single economic activity they do but also venture into other lucrative works to help cushion their financial status.
