Ghana Highway Authority To Regulates Overloaded Trucks On The Roads

The Ghana Highway Authority (GHA) from next week will begin an Axle Load strict regulations enforcement to help restrain truck drivers whose activities are destroying the roads and bridges in the country.

This is as result of the destruction of many overhead bridges by overloaded trucks whose loads are beyond the five-metre limit. This enforcement exercise will be carried out in collaboration with the Ghana Police Service which is in line with the Road Traffic Regulations,2012 (LI 2180).

The acting Chief Executive Officer of the GHA, Mr. Christian Nti, speaking to a Ghanaian based newspaper said, the authority had engaged the leadership of the police service to employ the right strategies to curb the overweight and over-height loaded trucks. The GHA is embarking on this exercise due to the manner in which heavy-duty vehicles drivers overload their trucks against the laws of country. According to Mr. Nti, the police will help them arrest and fine drivers who destroy the bridges with their cars in order to repair the damages caused by their trucks.
